{"id":161,"date":"2009-11-15T20:30:20","date_gmt":"2009-11-16T00:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/?p=161"},"modified":"2009-11-15T20:30:20","modified_gmt":"2009-11-16T00:30:20","slug":"stuck-at-the-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/stuck-at-the-border\/","title":{"rendered":"stuck at the border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello readers!<\/p>\n<p>Some days the border crossing can be quick, other days it can feel like molasses.<\/p>\n<p>The other night I was coming back over the border to Shenzhen and was stuck in a line that remained motionless while all the other lines advanced at a rate of one person per roughly 45 seconds.\u00a0 We were all told by the <strong>\u503c\u73ed\u961f\u957f<\/strong> (on-duty captain) to make sure that our entry cards were filled out.\u00a0 I suspect that the delay was caused by a person whose China visa had <strong>\u5931\u6548<\/strong> (lost effect), because that person was later taken to another room at the station.\u00a0 On another note, of all border crossings that I have been to, <strong>\u798f\u7530\u53e3\u5cb8 <\/strong>(Futian border crossing) was easily the slowest I have ever been to.\u00a0 Alas, neither crossing went smoothly.\u00a0 Back to the other night- after clearing HK exit customs, I hopped on a <strong>\u73ed\u8f66<\/strong> (shuttle) thinking that I would have an easy time crossing on the China side.\u00a0 What I did not know was that someone would try to <strong>\u8ba9<\/strong> (make) the driver <strong>\u6389\u5934<\/strong> (turn around) as there was a person who left a bag on the bus while he <strong>\u672c\u4eba<\/strong> (himself) ran to the bathroom.\u00a0 After exiting China customs, there was the usual array of <strong>\u4e0d\u6b63\u5f53<\/strong> (unordinary) transport options available, including unlicensed taxis, vans, and maybe even trucks.\u00a0 As I hopped into a licensed taxi, I wondered what an expert in <strong>\u91d1\u878d<\/strong> (finance) would have to say about this border transport micro-economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u503c\u73ed zhi2ban1 &#8211; on-duty<br \/>\n\u961f\u957f dui4zhang2 &#8211; team captain<br \/>\n\u5931\u6548 shi1xiao4 &#8211; lose effect<br \/>\n\u798f\u7530\u53e3\u5cb8 fu2tian2kou3an4 &#8211; Futian Border Crossing<br \/>\n\u73ed\u8f66 ban1che1 &#8211; shuttle<br \/>\n\u8ba9 rang4 &#8211; make, have sb. do sth.<br \/>\n\u6389\u5934 diao4tou2 &#8211; turn around<br \/>\n\u672c\u4eba ben3ren2 &#8211; [himself]<br \/>\n\u4e0d\u6b63\u5f53 bu2zheng4dang1 &#8211; unordinary<br \/>\n\u91d1\u878d jin1rong2 &#8211; finance<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello readers!
