In formal documents, a driver\u2019s license will appear as \u9a7e\u9a76\u6267\u7167<\/strong> (ji\u00e0 sh\u01d0 zh\u00ed zh\u00e0o), or \u9a7e\u9a76\u8bc1<\/strong> (ji\u00e0 sh\u01d0 zh\u00e8ng). Both terms include the verb \u9a7e\u9a76<\/strong> (ji\u00e0 sh\u01d0) which means to drive<\/em>, to pilot<\/em>. The common term used in spoken language is shorter and includes an abbreviation of this verb: \u9a7e\u7167<\/strong> ji\u00e0 zh\u00e0o.<\/p>\n

There are many driving schools, and varied options to choose from (\u9a7e\u6821\u7684\u9009\u62e9\u591a\u79cd\u591a\u6837<\/strong>, ji\u00e0 xi\u00e0o de xu\u01cen z\u00e9 du\u014d zh\u01d2ng du\u014d y\u00e0ng). The driving school guides its students through the four exams process. It costs thousands of RMB (starting from 3,000 Yuan) and takes a couple of months to get the license.<\/p>\n

The first exam is a written exam. \u79d1\u76ee\u4e00<\/strong> (k\u0113 m\u00f9 y\u012b, subject one<\/em>), also known as the theory test (\u7406\u8bba\u8003\u8bd5<\/strong> l\u01d0 l\u00f9n k\u01ceo sh\u00ec), is a theoretical examination on laws and traffic regulations, road safety laws and basic concepts on vehicles. The subject two examination (\u79d1\u76ee\u4e8c\u8003\u8bd5<\/strong>, k\u0113 m\u00f9 \u00e8r k\u01ceo sh\u00ec), also called the small road test (\u5c0f\u8def\u8003<\/strong>, xi\u01ceo l\u00f9 k\u01ceo), includes basic driving maneuvers. It covers reverse perpendicular parking, parallel parking, hill start, S turns, and angle turns.
