Gu\u01ceng ch\u01ceng w\u01d4 d\u01ceo bi\u00e0n b\u00f9 le Zh\u014dnggu\u00f3 m\u011bi y\u012b g\u00e8 ji\u01ceo lu\u00f2.<\/p>\n<p><em>Square dancing is a very important art form in China. The masses spontaneously organize dances in the squares, parks, and other simple open spaces in the city. Square dancing can be found everywhere in China.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In China\u2019s cities, big and small, you could see groups of dancers occupying urban open spaces, dancing together to the sound of mostly Chinese music. All genres are welcome \u2013 from pop to propaganda. One of the pop songs, for example, that became popular among the square dancers is the 2009 hit \u6700\u70ab\u6c11\u65cf\u98ce (zu\u00ec xu\u00e0n m\u00edn z\u00fa f\u0113ng), by one of China\u2019s hottest pop music duos Phoenix Legend. Most of them are Chinese seniors, who are enjoying the low cost group activity. Public square dancing is not only fun, it\u2019s also affordable. Access to a dancing troupe is unlimited and the steps are easy to learn. The music sweeps a person around, and the Chinese seniors are also attracted by the benefits of the light cardio workouts and socialization opportunities. For elders who had already retired, and for those who are living alone since their children left home, square dancing can provide the opportunity to talk with others, and to be part of a group.<\/p>\n<p>Since most participants are middle-aged and elderly women they are called in Chinese <strong>\u5e7f\u573a\u821e\u5927\u5988\u4eec<\/strong> (gu\u01ceng ch\u01ceng w\u01d4 d\u00e0 m\u0101 men), <em>dancing grannies<\/em> in English. The dancing grannies, however, gather 2 to 3 times a week, reviving the old good feeling of being a part of a unit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the dancing grannies square dancing is more than a hobby. They usually never miss a practice. All the lights are on, and the square is crowded with people learning to dance, everyone seems so energetic! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next time you are in China, you are welcome to watch and enjoy.
