As I mentioned in my last post<\/a>, Beijing recently held a massive celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party<\/strong>\u00a0(\u4e2d\u56fd\u5171\u4ea7\u515a zh\u014dng gu\u00f3 g\u00f2ng ch\u01cen d\u01ceng). During the event, which drew thousands of people to Tiananmen Square, Xi Jinping<\/strong> (\u4e60\u8fd1\u5e73 x\u00ed j\u00ecn p\u00edng) gave a long speech to the nation that attracted a lot of attention. Today we’ll take a closer look at Xi Jinping’s controversial speech and learn some Chinese in the process.<\/p>\n

First, let’s take a look at how Xi, who is known as the paramount leader<\/strong> (\u6700\u9ad8\u9886\u5bfc\u4eba zu\u00ec g\u0101o y\u014du xi\u0101n j\u00ed) of the CCP, addressed the crowd and nation to begin his speech:<\/p>\n

Today, the first of July, is a great and solemn day in the history of both the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese nation. We gather here to join all Party members and Chinese people of all ethnic groups around the country in celebrating the centenary of the Party, looking back on the glorious journey the Party has traveled over 100 years of struggle, and looking ahead to the bright prospects for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mr. Xi went on to tout the accomplishments that the Chinese Communist Party has made over the past 100 years:<\/p>\n

We have achieved our first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society on the land of China, historically solved the problem of absolute poverty, and are vigorously moving towards the second centenary goal of building a modern and powerful socialist country in an all-round way.<\/em><\/p>\n

He brought up the nation’s 5,000+ year history, along with some of the more turbulent times it has endured. One example he gave was the Opium War of 1840:<\/p>\n

The country was humiliated, the people were subjected to great pain, and the Chinese civilization was plunged into darkness.<\/em><\/p>\n

From there, he discussed the many failed attempts at revolution and how the country found itself in need of new ideas and a new organization to move forward:<\/p>\n

The birth of the Communist Party in China was a great event that broke ground. It profoundly changed the direction and process of the development of the Chinese nation after modern times, profoundly changed the future and destiny of the Chinese people and the Chinese nation, and profoundly changed the trend and pattern of world development.<\/em><\/p>\n
