I remember it from my first Chinese classes. It was part of their routine: the students were already sitting on their chairs, thick textbooks on their tables, when the teacher arrived. She entered the class, greeted us kindly, and asked: <strong>\u8bf7\u6253\u5f00\u4e66<\/strong> (q\u01d0ng d\u01ce k\u0101i sh\u016b, <em>please open the books<\/em>).\u00a0 <strong>\u6253\u5f00<\/strong> (d\u01ce k\u0101i) is a verb, meaning <em>to open<\/em>, <em>to turn something on<\/em>. It can refer to a book, box, gift, window, door, TV, and so on. It usually refers to objects that can be widely stretched out, as body parts, leaves and petals, collars, sails, clouds, etc. For example:<\/p>\n<p>\u5e06\u5747\u5df2\u5f20\u5f00\u3002<\/p>\n<p>F\u0101n j\u016bn y\u01d0 zh\u0101ng k\u0101i.<\/p>\n<p><em>The sails have been opened.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u82b1\u74e3\u5728\u9633\u5149\u4e0b\u5f20\u5f00\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Hu\u0101 b\u00e0n z\u00e0i yang gu\u0101ng xi\u00e0 zh\u0101ng k\u0101i le.<\/p>\n<p><em>The petals opened in the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u4ed6\u5f20\u5f00\u5634\u5df4\u8bf4\u4e0d\u51fa\u8bdd\u3002<\/p>\n<p>T\u0101 zh\u0101ng k\u0101i zu\u01d0 b\u0101 shu\u014d bu ch\u016b hu\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p><em>He opened his mouth and couldn&#8217;t speak.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another common phrase with the character <strong>\u5f00<\/strong> is <strong>\u5f00\u653e<\/strong> (k\u0101i f\u00e0ng). <strong>\u5f00\u653e<\/strong> is a verb with a different meaning of opening. It doesn\u2019t refer to objects; it belongs to the semantic fields of regulations and flora. When referring to flowers the verb <strong>\u5f00\u653e<\/strong> means <em>to bloom, to come into bloom<\/em>. It is well known from the Chinese term of the Opening of China in the late 1970s: \u6539\u9769\u5f00\u653e (g\u01cei g\u00e9 k\u0101i fang, <em>Opening Reform<\/em>). The reform\u2019s goal was well concluded in the Central Committee meeting:\u00a0 \u6539\u9769\u5f00\u653e\u53ef\u603b\u7ed3\u4e3a\u5bf9\u5185\u6539\u9769\uff0c\u5bf9\u5916\u5f00\u653e (g\u01cei g\u00e9 k\u0101i f\u00e0ng k\u011b z\u01d2ng ji\u00e9 w\u00e9i du\u00ec n\u00e8i g\u01ce ig\u00e9, du\u00ec w\u00e0i k\u0101i f\u00e0ng, <em>the Opening Reform can be summarized as internal reform and opening to the outside world<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u5f00 also stands for itself. It\u2019s a verb meaning <em>to open<\/em>, that is used without the character \u6253 preceding it. It refers to any object, but notice that with some objects the \u5f00 + object phrase bears extra meaning. The phrase <strong>\u5f00\u95e8<\/strong> (k\u0101i m\u00e9n, <em>to open<\/em> + <em>door<\/em>), for example, has two meanings. The first simply means to open an actual door, and refers to the physical action of opening the door. The second usage of the phrase <strong>\u5f00\u95e8<\/strong>applies to stores, restaurants and other commercial services. It means to open the door in order to receive the public, to start the business day.
