The Beijing\u2019s Bird\u2019s Nest and the Water Cube, which are actually called The Beijing National Stadium and The Beijing National Aquatics Center, were originally designed and constructed to host the 2008 Olympic Games. Their great architectures and impressive appearances made them attractive tourist sites to visit, even more than a decade after the Beijing Games.<\/p>\n

The Water Cube\u2019s Chinese nickname\u00a0 \u0336\u00a0 \u6c34\u7acb\u65b9<\/strong> shu\u01d0 l\u00ec fang\u00a0 \u0336 \u00a0is literally translated as water cube<\/em>, as well. \u6c34<\/strong> (shu\u01d0) is a noun meaning water<\/em>, and \u7acb\u65b9<\/strong> (l\u00ec f\u0101ng) is a noun that means cube<\/em>. With Beijing being awarded the\u00a02022 Winter Olympics,\u00a0both structures will be used again to host the games. Part of the Water Cube was renovated to allow the hosting of\u00a0curling\u00a0events. As a result the structure recently acquired a new nickname, since people started to call it the Ice Cube (\u51b0\u7acb\u65b9 <\/strong>b\u012bng l\u00ec f\u0101ng).<\/p>\n

The word \u7acb\u65b9<\/strong> that appears in the above nicknames, and the word \u7acb\u65b9\u4f53<\/strong> (l\u00ec f\u0101ng t\u01d0), both mean cube<\/em>. Both belong to the semantic field of geometry; they are mainly used to describe bodies and structures. For example:<\/p>\n

One other character that describes small pieces in a shape of cube is \u4e01<\/strong> (d\u012bng). \u4e01<\/strong> is used to describe meat or dough in a shape of small cubes. Like in the famous dish of \u5bab\u4fdd\u9e21\u4e01<\/strong> (g\u014dng b\u01ceo j\u012b d\u012bng), known in English as the Kung Pao chicken. \u5bab\u4fdd\u9e21\u4e01<\/strong> is a spicy, stir-fried Chinese dish made with cubes of chicken, peanuts, and vegetables. Another stir-fried diced meat dish, for example, is \u6bdb\u8c46\u7092\u8089\u4e01<\/strong> (m\u00e1o d\u00f2u ch\u01ceo r\u00f2u d\u012bng) made with beans.<\/p>\n

For dice, Chinese has different characters: \u8272\u5b50<\/strong> (sh\u01cei zi) and \u9ab0\u5b50<\/strong> (t\u00f3u zi). For example:<\/p>\n
