It’s more fun talking about what you like to do<\/em> in your spare time than what you have to do<\/em> at work or school. Plus, finding people who share the same hobbies as you gives you the chance to make new friends and have even more opportunities to practice speaking. In this post I’ll help you gain the confidence you need for talking about hobbies in Chinese.<\/p>\n

Looking at this list of hobbies, you may notice a few things. For one, the Chinese words for “play basketball” and “play football” are different. For basketball, you use the verb \u6253. This is used for sports that you play with your hands, so you can also use it for ping pong, volleyball, tennis, and so on. Football uses the verb \u8e22 as you play it with your feet.<\/p>\n

You’ll also notice that the verbs for “play guitar” and “play violin” are different. For guitar, you use \u5f39, while for the violin you use \u62c9. Which verb you use depends on the instrument and how you play it. You can use \u5f39 for instruments that you pluck or play, like the guitar or piano. Instruments that you use a bow for, like the violin or cello, use the verb \u62c9.<\/p>\n
