She started as one of the emperor\u2019s low-ranking concubines. She gave birth to his first son, and after the emperor death she seized power and ruled over the Chinese empire for almost half a century.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, she left the palace one hot summer day, trying to cool down in the fresh air. She was sitting in Beihai Park \u2013 currently a public park, but back then an imperial garden located in the northern part of the Imperial City, Beijing. She suddenly heard a peddler (<strong>\u5c0f\u8d29<\/strong> xi\u01ceo f\u00e0n) shouting in the street. She enjoyed the sweet refreshing (<strong>\u9999\u751c\u723d\u53e3<\/strong> xi\u0101ng ti\u00e1n shu\u01ceng k\u01d2u) treat so much, she asked the man to stay in the palace to make these cakes for her. A shout outside the imperial garden brought a touch of the common people into the palace, changed the man\u2019s destiny, and made the Beijing snack (<strong>\u5c0f\u5403<\/strong> xi\u01ceo ch\u012b) nationally famous.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u8c4c\u8c46\u9ec4\u539f\u672c\u5e73\u6c11\u5c0f\u5403\uff0c\u53ea\u56e0\u6148\u79a7\u559c\u98df\u800c\u51fa\u540d\u3002<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>W\u0101n d\u00f2u hu\u00e1ng yuan b\u011bn p\u00edng m\u00edn xi\u01ceo ch\u012b, zh\u01d0 y\u012bn c\u00ed x\u01d0 x\u01d0 sh\u00ed \u00e9r ch\u016b m\u00edng.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Yellow pea cake was originally a snack of the common people, but it became famous as Cixi\u2019s favorite food.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sweet yellow refreshing dessert (<strong>\u751c\u70b9<\/strong> ti\u00e1n di\u01cen), made of pea \u2013 hence its name, was improved by the imperial dining room of the Qing palace. To top the imperial banquet the imperial kitchen used refined preparation methods and made the local snack fine and exquisite (<strong>\u7ec6\u817b<\/strong> x\u00ec n\u00ec).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u8c4c\u8c46\u9ec4\u989c\u8272\u6d45\u9ec4\u3001\u5473\u9053\u6e05\u751c\u3001\u5165\u53e3\u5373\u5316\u7684\u3002<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>W\u0101n d\u00f2u hu\u00e1ng y\u00e1n s\u00e8 qi\u01cen hu\u00e1ng, w\u00e8i d\u00e0o q\u012bng ti\u00e1n, r\u00f9 k\u01d2u j\u00ed hu\u00e0 de.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Yellow pea cake is light yellow in color, has a sweet taste and melts in the mouth.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is known as the empress\u2019s favorite food (<strong>\u98df\u54c1<\/strong> sh\u00ed p\u01d0n), but can be made in any kitchen. The ingredients are simple, and you can even use green peas if you like. It should be refrigerated for several hours before plating it, and served cool and delicious (<strong>\u6e05\u51c9\u53ef\u53e3<\/strong> q\u012bng li\u00e1ng k\u0115 k\u014fu).
