I can&#8217;t believe that it&#8217;s now been 14 years since I first landed in Beijing for the <strong>Summer Olympics<\/strong> (\u590f\u5b63\u5965\u8fd0\u4f1a xi\u00e0 j\u00ec \u00e0o y\u00f9n hu\u00ec). It&#8217;s definitely different this time around, and not just because of the seasons. The ongoing <strong>pandemic<\/strong> (\u5927\u6d41\u884c d\u00e0 li\u00fa x\u00edng) and China&#8217;s strict &#8220;<strong>zero policy<\/strong>&#8221; (\u6e05\u96f6\u653f\u7b56 q\u012bng l\u00edng zh\u00e8ng c\u00e8) are making for a strange edition of the winter games. While the Winter Olympics are officially called \u51ac\u5b63\u5965\u8fd0\u4f1a (d\u014dng j\u00ec \u00e0o y\u00f9n hu\u00ec), it&#8217;s typically shortened to \u51ac\u5965\u4f1a (d\u014dng \u00e0o hu\u00ec). Similarly, the Summer Olympics can just be called \u590f\u5965\u4f1a (xi\u00e0 \u00e0o hu\u00ec). If you&#8217;ve been studying Chinese for some time, you&#8217;ve probably realized by now that many things have shortened names that are used colloquially.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Beijing Hosts Again<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Beijing is the host city this year<\/strong> (\u5317\u4eac\u662f\u4eca\u5e74\u7684\u4e3b\u529e\u57ce\u5e02 b\u011bi j\u012bng sh\u00ec j\u012bn ni\u00e1n de zh\u01d4 b\u00e0n ch\u00e9ng sh\u00ec). Fun fact &#8211; Beijing is the first city to ever host both the summer and winter editions of the Olympics. This also marks the 3rd Olympics in a row in East Asia after 2018 in <strong>PyeongChang<\/strong> (\u5e73\u660c p\u00edng ch\u0101ng) and <del>2020<\/del> 2021 in <strong>Tokyo<\/strong> (\u4e1c\u4eac d\u014dng j\u012bng). The Chinese capital won the right to host the 2022 games after beating <strong>Almaty<\/strong> (\u963f\u62c9\u6728\u56fe \u0100l\u0101 m\u00f9 t\u00fa) by four votes.<\/p>\n<p>The motto for this year&#8217;s Winter Olympics is &#8220;<strong>Together for a shared future<\/strong>&#8221; (\u4e00\u8d77\u5411\u672a\u6765 y\u012b q\u01d0 xi\u00e0ng w\u00e8i l\u00e1i). The emblem is called &#8220;<strong>winter dream<\/strong>&#8221; (\u51ac\u68a6 d\u014dng m\u00e8ng) &#8211; a multi-colored ribbon that looks like a figure skater and skier in the style of the Chinese character for winter. Representing the &#8217;22 games is <strong>Bing Dwen Dwen<\/strong> (\u51b0\u58a9\u58a9 b\u012bng d\u016bn d\u016bn) &#8211; a giant panda sporting a suit of ice, which is fitting since its name actually means &#8220;ice.&#8221; Meanwhile, <b>Shuey Rhon Rhon <\/b>(\u96ea\u5bb9\u878d xu\u011b r\u00f3ng r\u00f3ng) is a Chinese lantern and has &#8220;snow&#8221; in its name. For the record, I&#8217;m not sure why their official English names are spelled so differently than the <em>pinyin<\/em> transliteration. Several events are taking place at the <strong>Olympic Green<\/strong> (\u5965\u6797\u5339\u514b\u516c\u56ed \u00c0o l\u00edn p\u01d0 k\u00e8 g\u014dng yu\u00e1n) that was built for the 2008 games. This includes the <strong>National Aquatics Center<\/strong> (\u56fd\u5bb6\u6e38\u6cf3\u4e2d\u5fc3 gu\u00f3 ji\u0101 y\u00f3u y\u01d2ng zh\u014dng x\u012bn), more commonly known as the <strong>Water Cube<\/strong> (\u6c34\u7acb\u65b9 shu\u01d0 l\u00ec f\u0101ng) for curling.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>opening ceremony<\/strong> (\u5f00\u5e55\u5f0f k\u0101i m\u00f9 sh\u00ec) and <strong>closing ceremony<\/strong> (\u95ed\u5e55\u5f0f b\u00ec m\u00f9 sh\u00ec) are both happening at the <strong>National Stadium<\/strong> (\u56fd\u5bb6\u4f53\u80b2\u573a gu\u00f3 ji\u0101 t\u01d0 y\u00f9 ch\u01ceng), also known as the <strong>Bird&#8217;s Nest<\/strong> (\u9e1f\u5de2 ni\u01ceo ch\u00e1o). Meanwhile, events that require actual mountains and snow are being held outside of town in <strong>Yanqing District<\/strong> (\u5ef6\u5e86\u533a y\u00e1n q\u00ecng q\u016b) and <strong>Zhangjiakou<\/strong> (\u5f20\u5bb6\u53e3 zh\u0101ng ji\u0101 k\u01d2u), which is actually in neighboring Hebei province.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Winter Olympic Sports<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot going on at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. First place takes home a <strong>gold medal<\/strong> (\u91d1\u724c j\u012bn p\u00e1i), which the runner up gets a <strong>silver medal<\/strong> (\u94f6\u724c y\u00edn p\u00e1i) and third place a <strong>bronze medal<\/strong> (\u94dc\u724c t\u00f3ng p\u00e1i).
