The other day I was with my friend in a town called Lao Cai in the northern part of Vietnam. It was there that I saw something that I would never have imagined- a Vietnamese casino which counts its bets in \u4eba\u6c11\u5e01<\/strong> <\/span>(RMB, Chinese currency). Situated on the border with China, the casino <\/span>primarily <\/span>attracted Chinese tourists who came to play \u767e\u5bb6\u4e50<\/strong> (Baccarat). One unsettling reminder of the dark side of border crossings surfaced when we saw a sign warning of prosecution for \u62d0\u5356\u4eba\u53e3<\/strong> (human trafficking). <\/span>As Lao Cai is next to \u4e91\u5357<\/strong> (Yunnan province), there are many <\/span>\u50a3\u65cf<\/strong> (Dai people) from Yunnan who cross the border to work in Vietnam. While in Lao Cai, we saw the \u65e5\u98df<\/strong> (solar eclipse) which occurred that day.\u00a0 Near Lao Cai is a <\/span>\u5c71\u533a<\/strong> (mountainous region) <\/span>called Sapa, where many of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities reside.\u00a0 From Lao Cai we made our way to <\/span>\u6cb3\u5185 <\/strong>(Hanoi) where we learned about <\/span>\u80e1\u5fd7\u660e<\/strong> (Ho Chi Minh) and tried to avoid spending our \u8d8a\u5357\u5143<\/strong> (Vietnamese dong) as much as was possible.
