It was there that I saw something that I would never have imagined- a Vietnamese casino which counts its bets in <strong>\u4eba\u6c11\u5e01<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"__tts\">(RMB, Chinese currency).  Situated on the border with China, the casino <\/span><span class=\"__tts\">primarily <\/span><span class=\"__tts\">attracted Chinese tourists who came to play <strong>\u767e\u5bb6\u4e50<\/strong> (Baccarat).  One unsettling reminder of the dark side of border crossings surfaced when we saw a sign warning of prosecution for <strong>\u62d0\u5356\u4eba\u53e3<\/strong> (human trafficking). <\/span><span class=\"__tts\">As Lao Cai is next to <strong>\u4e91\u5357<\/strong> (Yunnan province), there are many <\/span><span class=\"__tts\"><strong>\u50a3\u65cf<\/strong> (Dai people) from Yunnan who cross the border to work in Vietnam.  While in Lao Cai, we saw the <strong>\u65e5\u98df<\/strong> (solar eclipse) which occurred that day.\u00a0  Near Lao Cai is a <\/span><span class=\"__tts\"><strong>\u5c71\u533a<\/strong> (mountainous region) <\/span><span class=\"__tts\">called Sapa, where many of Vietnam&#8217;s ethnic minorities reside.\u00a0 From Lao Cai we made our way to <\/span><span class=\"__tts\"><strong>\u6cb3\u5185 <\/strong>(Hanoi) where we learned about <\/span><span class=\"__tts\"><strong>\u80e1\u5fd7\u660e<\/strong> (Ho Chi Minh) and tried to avoid spending our <strong>\u8d8a\u5357\u5143<\/strong> (Vietnamese dong) as much as was possible.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"__tts\">\u4eba\u6c11\u5e01 ren2min2bi4 &#8211; Renminbi, the official name of the Chinese currency<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"__tts\">\u767e\u5bb6\u4e50 bai3jia1le4 &#8211; Baccarat, a card game found in casinos (and many James Bond films)<br \/>\n\u62d0\u5356\u4eba\u53e3 guai3mai4ren2kou3 &#8211; human trafficking\/smuggling<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"__tts\">\u4e91\u5357 yun2nan2 &#8211; Yunnan province<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"__tts\"> \u50a3\u65cf dai3zu2 &#8211; the Dai people, one of China&#8217;s ethnic minority groups<br \/>\n\u65e5\u98df ri4shi2 &#8211; solar eclipse<br \/>\n\u5c71\u533a shan1qu1 &#8211; mountain regions\/mountainous region<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"__tts\"> \u6cb3\u5185  he2nei4 &#8211; Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"__tts\"> \u80e1\u5fd7\u660e hu2zhi4ming2 &#8211; Ho Chi Minh<br \/>\n\u8d8a\u5357\u5143 yue4nan2yuan2 &#8211; Vietnamese Dong<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I was with my friend in a town called Lao Cai in the northern part of Vietnam.
