I am currently writing from Laos, where yesterday I saw a large group of Chinese tourists busy on \u6625\u6e38 <\/strong>(spring travel).\u00a0 Several \u623f\u8f66<\/strong> (RVs) were on the streets in Luang Prabang, not unlike some American tourists on tour.\u00a0 The tourists’ cars (they drove)\u00a0 \u8981\u4e48<\/strong> (either) were from \u4e91\u5357<\/strong> (Yunnan)\uff0c\u8981\u4e48<\/strong> (either, see below) were from \u91cd\u5e86<\/strong> (Chongqing), which could be deduced from the cars’ license plates displaying the license plate codes \u4e91<\/strong> (short for “Yunnan”) and \u6e1d<\/strong> (short for Chongqing).\u00a0 While hiking today, I ran into a person from Yunnan whose acquaintance I made in Vang Vieng, and uttered \u53c8\u89c1\u9762\u4e86 <\/strong>(essentially [it’s you again!]).\u00a0 Another interesting site to see was a Chinese woman at a tourist office holding a single 100RMB note wondering aloud, “\u4ed6\u4eec\u542c\u4e0d\u61c2\u6211\u7684\u8bdd\u600e\u4e48\u529e<\/strong>?” as this is a common concern among tourists, especially those pressed to \u6362\u94b1<\/strong> (exchange money).\u00a0 The best indicator of the number of tourists was easily at the waterfalls, where nearly 100 tourists all \u51d1\u8fc7\u6765<\/strong> (came\/crowded around) to watch other waterfall visitors swing from a rope and jump into the clear water below.<\/p>\n

\n\u623f\u8f66 fang2che1 – Recreational Vehicle (motor home)
\n\u8981\u4e48 ___\uff0c\u8981\u4e48___ yao4me, yao4me – either ___ or ___
\n\u4e91\u5357 yun2nan2 – Yunnan province
\n\u91cd\u5e86 chong2qing4 – Chongqing
\n\u4e91 yun2 – can mean “cloud” on its own. also used as the license plate code for Yunnan province
\n\u6e1d yu4 – symbol used on Chinese license plates to indicate Chongqing
\n\u53c8\u89c1\u9762\u4e86 you4jian4mian4le – “it’s you again!” or “here we are again”
\n\u4ed6\u4eec \u542c\u4e0d\u61c2\u6211\u7684\u8bdd\u600e\u4e48 – ta1men2 ting1bu4dong3 wo3de hua4 zen3me ban4? – If they don’t understand what I’m saying, what should I do?
\n\u6362\u94b1 huan4qian2 – change money
\n\u51d1\u8fc7\u6765 cou4guo4lai2 – crowd around, come over
