When I told a friend of mine that an overwhelming amount of of the world’s \u5c71\u5be8<\/strong> (bandit, or knockoff- see below) phones were manufactured within a \u534a\u5f84<\/strong> (radius) of 2 miles from my apartment, he \u6000\u7591<\/strong> (suspected) that there was no way it could be true.\u00a0 Just yesterday, I sent him an article from the \u91d1\u878d\u65f6\u62a5<\/strong> (Financial Times) attesting to the widespread presence of these cellphones and their effect on international markets.\u00a0 The article focused chiefly on the \u534e\u5f3a\u5317<\/strong> (Hua Qiang North road) area, a nucleus for technology peripherals as well as knockoff phones and \u76d7\u7248<\/strong> (pirated versions [of]) software.\u00a0 I have heard an unsubstantiated claim to the effect that that any knockoff phone containing \u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\u65b9\u5757<\/strong> (Tetris) will be seized at the airport as the owner passes \u5b89\u68c0<\/strong> ([the] security check) at the airport.\u00a0 I have seen these phones in Shenzhen as well as in Laos, some even bearing real analog clocks on the handset!\u00a0 If there’s anything that the makers of these phones have in common with students of learning Chinese, I’d say a strong \u6a21\u4eff\u529b<\/strong> (ability to imitate) is an asset.<\/p>\n

\u5c71\u5be8 shan1zhai4 – lit. “mountain village” “cottage”.\u00a0 refers to counterfeit or knockoff items.\u00a0 often associated with a bandit-like or renegade attitude.

\n\u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\u65b9\u5757 e2luo2si1fang1kuai4 – Tetris (lit. Russian blocks)
