{"id":189,"date":"2010-02-20T21:09:43","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T01:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/?p=189"},"modified":"2010-02-20T21:09:43","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T01:09:43","slug":"shanzhai-phones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/shanzhai-phones\/","title":{"rendered":"Shanzhai Phones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I told a friend of mine that an overwhelming amount of of the world&#8217;s <strong>\u5c71\u5be8<\/strong> (bandit, or knockoff- see below) phones were manufactured within a <strong>\u534a\u5f84<\/strong> (radius) of 2 miles from my apartment, he <strong>\u6000\u7591<\/strong> (suspected) that there was no way it could be true.\u00a0 Just yesterday, I sent him an article from the <strong>\u91d1\u878d\u65f6\u62a5<\/strong> (Financial Times) attesting to the widespread presence of these cellphones and their effect on international markets.\u00a0 The article focused chiefly on the <strong>\u534e\u5f3a\u5317<\/strong> (Hua Qiang North road) area, a nucleus for technology peripherals as well as knockoff phones and <strong>\u76d7\u7248<\/strong> (pirated versions [of]) software.\u00a0 I have heard an unsubstantiated claim to the effect that that any knockoff phone containing <strong>\u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\u65b9\u5757<\/strong> (Tetris) will be seized at the airport as the owner passes <strong>\u5b89\u68c0<\/strong> ([the] security check) at the airport.\u00a0 I have seen these phones in Shenzhen as well as in Laos, some even bearing real analog clocks on the handset!\u00a0 If there&#8217;s anything that the makers of these phones have in common with students of learning Chinese, I&#8217;d say a strong <strong>\u6a21\u4eff\u529b<\/strong> (ability to imitate) is an asset.<\/p>\n<p>\u5c71\u5be8 shan1zhai4 &#8211; lit. &#8220;mountain village&#8221; &#8220;cottage&#8221;.\u00a0 refers to counterfeit or knockoff items.\u00a0 often associated with a bandit-like or renegade attitude.<br \/>\n\u534a\u5f84 ban4jing1 &#8211; radius<br \/>\n\u6000\u7591 huai2yi2 &#8211; suspect<br \/>\n\u91d1\u878d\u65f6\u62a5 jin1rong2shi2bao4 &#8211; Financial Times<br \/>\n\u534e\u5f3a\u5317 hua2qiang2bei3 &#8211; Hua Qiang North road, a concentrated area full of markets for electronics and components<br \/>\n\u76d7\u7248 dao4ban3 &#8211; pirated [version]<br \/>\n\u4fc4\u7f57\u65af\u65b9\u5757 e2luo2si1fang1kuai4 &#8211; Tetris (lit.
