It&#8217;s a happy time, where the daily grind of China life is placed on the back burner for mutual enjoyment and celebration. People wish each other prosperity and good luck in the coming year by saying: \u606d\u559c\u53d1\u8d22 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/gong1.aif\">(g\u014dng<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/xi3.aif\">x\u01d0<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/fa1.aif\">f\u0101<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/cai2.aif\">c\u00e1i<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A famous tradition for Chinese New Year is the lighting off of firecrackers (\u653e\u97ad\u70ae &#8211; f\u00e0ng bi\u0101n p\u00e0o). It is believed that doing so helps keep the evil Nian beast away, as well as other evil spirits in general. Around Spring Festival, it is not uncommon to hear firecrackers going off all day long, and on New Year&#8217;s Eve, it seems as if they never stop.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chinese New Year Fireworks In Shanghai - 2011 Year of the Rabbit!\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lmVbeg95598?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While the Lunar New Year and Spring Festival encompass weeks of tradition and celebration, February 3rd marks the actual New Year Day in Chinese lunar calendars. Even with temperatures in the negatives, it&#8217;s a time of celebration, which includes the company of friends and family, along with massive banquets, drinking and of course&#8230;loud noises.<\/p>\n<p>This New Year will usher in the year of the Rabbit. My next post will cover the year of the rabbit and will explain Chinese traditions in greater depth. Until then, find some friends and family to spend time with.
