His impact on Chinese culture has been so profound that some 2,500 years later his teachings are still well known and well respected.<\/p>\n<p>Like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and other Greek\/Roman philosophers,\u00a0 Confucius spent his entire life trying to reconcile the social world with the natural world, looking for truths throughout that would improve society and the relationship between man and spiritual world.<\/p>\n<p>The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism or \u6cd5\u5bb6 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/fa3.aif\">f\u01ce<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/jia1.aif\">ji\u0101<\/a>) and Taoism or \u9053\u5bb6 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/dao4.aif\">D\u00e0o<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/jia1.aif\">ji\u0101<\/a>) during the Han Dynasty (206 BC\u00a0\u2013 AD 220). As a result, Confucius&#8217; thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as\u00a0<em>Confucianism<\/em> or \u5112\u5bb6 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/ru2.aif\">r\u00fa<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mandarintools.com\/sounds\/jia1.aif\">ji\u0101<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The following selections are on studying and learning from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Analects\" target=\"_blank\">Confucian Analects<\/a>. I thought they would be fitting for our Chinese learners. Heed these words, for few scholars can compare to the intellectual prowess of Master Confucius.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u6e29\u6545\u800c\u77e5\u65b0\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u4e3a\u5e08\u77e3.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One is worthy of being or becoming a teacher if one is able to derive new understanding while revising what he has learned.&#8221;&#8211;Truer words have nigh been spoke!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u5b66\u800c\u4e0d\u601d\uff0c\u5219\u7f54\uff1b\u601d\u800c\u4e0d\u5b66\uff0c\u5219\u6b86.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To learn without thinking, one will be lost in his learning. To think without learning, one will be imperilled.&#8221; &#8212; Seems a little ridiculous considering that almost all Chinese education systems have developed into &#8220;rote memorization&#8221; where creativity and thinking plays second fiddle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;\u5b66\u800c\u65f6\u4e60\u4e4b\uff0c\u4e0d\u4ea6\u8bf4\u4e4e\uff1f\u6709\u670b\u81ea\u8fdc\u65b9\u6765\uff0c\u4e0d\u4ea6\u4e50\u4e4e\uff1f\u4eba\u4e0d\u77e5\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u6120\uff0c\u4e0d\u4ea6\u541b\u5b50\u4e4e?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To learn and then practice it time and again is a pleasure, is it not? To have friends come from afar to share each other learning is a pleasure, is it not? To be unperturbed when not appreciated by others is gentlemanly, is it not?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u77e5\u4e4b\u8005\uff0c\u4e0d\u5982\u597d\u4e4b\u8005\uff1b\u597d\u4e4b\u8005\uff0c\u4e0d\u5982\u4e50\u4e4b\u8005.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8221; To merely know is nothing compared to being interested to know, being interested to know is nothing compared to deriving joy from learning it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u5b50\u590f\u66f0\uff1a\u201c\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u80fd\u597d\u4eba\u4e4b\u8d24\u5fb7\u80dc\u8fc7\u5176\u597d\u8272\u4e4b\u5fc3\uff0c\u5949\u4e8b\u7236\u6bcd\u80fd\u5c3d\u529b\uff0c\u4e8b\u541b\u80fd\u5949\u8eab\u5c3d\u804c\uff0c\u4ea4\u53cb\u80fd\u6709\u4fe1\uff0c\u8fd9\u6837\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u7eb5\u4f7f\u4ed6\u81ea\u8c26\u8bf4\u672a\u7ecf\u5b66\u95ee\uff0c\u6211\u5fc5\u8bf4\u4ed6\u5df2\u6709\u5b66\u95ee\u4e86\u3002\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8221; I would grant that a man is indeed schooled if he revered virtues instead of beauty, devoted in serving his parents, exert himself to the utmost in serving his lord, and behave with trustworthiness with his friends, even though he is said to be not schooled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c\u543e\u6709\u77e5\u4e4e\u54c9\uff1f\u65e0\u77e5\u4e5f\u3002\u6709\u9119\u592b\u95ee\u4e8e\u6211\uff0c\u7a7a\u7a7a\u5982\u4e5f\u3002\u6211\u53e9\u5176\u4e24\u7aef\u800c\u7aed\u7109.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do I have wisdom? No, I do not have. If someone is to ask me a question, I do not think I would be able to answer.
