The other weekend I got back from \u6b66\u6c49<\/strong> (Wuhan), where I was giving a \u6f14\u8bb2<\/strong> (speech).\u00a0 Some pretty memorable things happened there.\u00a0 I went with my host to a\u00a0 \u504f\u8fdc\u7684\u519c\u6751<\/strong> (very rural village), which was where he grew up before leaving to attend high school.\u00a0 We dined on \u519c\u5bb6\u83dc<\/strong> (countryside food) such as meatballs and noodles.\u00a0 One of the strangest things that happened though was this woman ran up to me gesturing excitedly and pointing towards the mountains in the distance.\u00a0 I’m normally in Beijing, so I don’t hear very much Wuhanese; after thinking to myself that I should really make a better effort to learn more Wuhanese while there, I looked to my host for an explanation of what she was saying.\u00a0 He looks at me blankly and says “she’s a \u54d1\u5df4<\/strong> \uff08mute)\uff0c I don’t know what she’s saying either.”\u00a0 Another thing that happened was that we were at a restaurant and my host picked a spice out of the soup, examined it carefully, and called the manager in to the room where we were eating.\u00a0 He pointed out that this spice was a complete fake and that they should check their supplier.\u00a0 He indicated that this type of root grows at a height of \u6d77\u62d4<\/strong>2000\u7c73<\/strong> (2000 meters above sea level) and can only be harvested in 3 places in China.\u00a0 Everyone took his word for it, as he was an accomplished \u4e13\u5bb6<\/strong> (expert) in the field of \u4e2d\u836f<\/strong> (Chinese medicine).<\/p>\n
