It’s time again for the Summer Olympics\u00a0<\/strong>(\u590f\u5b63\u5965\u8fd0\u4f1a – xi\u00e0 j\u00ec \u00e0o y\u00f9n hu\u00ec), which means it’s been a whole four years since I came to Beijing and China hosted the games for the first time. How time flies! This year, of course, the games are being hosted by London\u00a0<\/strong>(\u4f26\u6566 – l\u00fan d\u016bn). Many athletes\u00a0<\/strong>(\u8fd0\u52a8\u5458 – y\u00f9n d\u00f2ng yu\u00e1n) from all over the world will take part in this incredible event that comes but once every four years. They’ve put their blood, sweat, and tears into years of grueling training just for this chance to prove that they are the best in the world. They have traveled many miles, and so has the Olympic torch<\/strong> (\u5965\u8fd0\u706b\u70ac –\u00a0\u00c0o y\u00f9n hu\u01d2 j\u00f9), the most famous symbol of the Games.<\/p>\n

This great tradition dates all the way back to the summer of 1896, when the first MODERN Olympic games were held in Athens\u00a0<\/strong>(\u96c5\u5178 –\u00a0y\u01ce di\u01cen). The Opening Ceremony\u00a0<\/strong>(\u5f00\u5e55\u5f0f –\u00a0k\u0101i m\u00f9 sh\u00ec) was last night, and it was quite impressive to say the least. Even her Majesty, the Queen of England<\/strong> (\u82f1\u56fd\u5973\u738b –\u00a0y\u012bng gu\u00f3 n\u01da w\u00e1ng), was in attendance.\u00a0To get you amped up for the next few weeks full of competition, and especially to talk about it in Chinese, here’s some useful vocabulary:<\/p>\n
