Between 2002 and 2008 alone, the number of higher education students in China quadrupled. In Beijing alone, there are 82 institutions of higher education \u2013 a list that includes a police academy, a sports college, a dance academy, political colleges, and everything in between.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8680\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/chinas-top-10-universities\/gaokao-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8680\" aria-label=\"Gaokao\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8680\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8680\"  alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/04\/gaokao.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u597d\u597d\u5b66\u4e60\uff0c\u5929\u5929\u5411\u4e0a - Good good study, day day up!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With more students hoping to enter a college or university than there are open spaces, the admissions process is quite intense and incredibly competitive. The\u00a0<strong>National Higher Education Entrance Exam\u00a0<\/strong>(\u666e\u901a\u9ad8\u7b49\u5b66\u6821\u62db\u751f\u5168\u56fd\u7edf\u4e00\u8003\u8bd5 \u2013 p\u01d4 t\u014dng g\u0101o d\u011bng xu\u00e9 xi\u00e0o zh\u0101o sh\u0113ng qu\u00e1n gu\u00f3 t\u01d2ng y\u012b k\u01ceo sh\u00ec), or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Higher_Education_Entrance_Examination\"><strong>Gao Kao<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(\u9ad8\u8003 \u2013 g\u0101o k\u01ceo) for short. This exam lasts for 2-3 days, and varies in different provinces. Just as American high school students stress out about the ACT or SAT exam, Chinese high school students feel an immense amount of pressure to succeed on the\u00a0<em>Gao Kao<\/em>, as their admission into a university or college rides almost entirely on their performance. There are national universities, as administered by the\u00a0<strong>Chinese Ministry of Education\u00a0<\/strong>(\u4e2d\u534e\u4eba\u6c11\u5171\u548c\u56fd\u6559\u80b2\u90e8 \u2013 Zh\u014dng hu\u00e1 r\u00e9n m\u00edn g\u00f2ng h\u00e9 gu\u00f3 ji\u00e0o y\u00f9 b\u00f9). These schools are known as \u201c<strong>Universities directly under the MOE<\/strong>\u201d (\u6559\u80b2\u90e8\u76f4\u5c5e\u9ad8\u6821 \u2013 ji\u00e0o y\u00f9 b\u00f9 zh\u00ed sh\u01d4 g\u0101o xi\u00e0o). In addition, there are provincial universities that are administered by the particular province along with other public universitities administered by the municipality. Finally, there has been an influx of privately owned and funded higher learning institutiions in the last decade. As you can see, the top two schools are both located in Beijing. This is why competition is so stiff amongst Chinese youth (and their parents, for that matter) to get into a Beijing based university. As children who grew up in Beijing have a higher chance of getting into these schools than do students from other provinces, moving to Beijing and sending your kid to middle\/high school here is a high priority for many Chinese parents.<\/p>\n<p>One change about this year&#8217;s list from the past year is that the university where I work &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Renmin University<\/strong>\u00a0(\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u6c11\u5927\u5b66 \u2013 Zh\u014dng gu\u00f3 r\u00e9n m\u00edn d\u00e0 xu\u00e9) &#8211; got bumped off the list.
