What happens when you mix Chinese and English? Well, you end up with Chinglish<\/strong> (\u4e2d\u5f0f\u82f1\u8bed – zh\u014dng sh\u00ec y\u012bng y\u01d4). Sometimes, Chinglish is just formed by using Chinese\u00a0grammatical\u00a0structures in English. Trying to translate Chinese directly into English will give you sentences such as “I very like play basketball<\/strong>” (\u6211\u5f88\u559c\u6b22\u6253\u7bee\u7403 – w\u01d2 h\u011bn x\u01d0 huan d\u01ce l\u00e1n qi\u00fa)\u00a0or “I with my friend together have dinner<\/strong>” (\u6211\u8ddf\u6211\u7684\u670b\u53cb\u4e00\u8d77\u5403\u665a\u996d – w\u01d2 g\u0113n w\u01d2 de p\u00e9ng y\u01d2u y\u012b q\u01d0 ch\u012b w\u01cen f\u00e0n).\u00a0Other times, it is a result of trying to directly translate Chinese words for foreign things. That’s why I’ve had students ask me about “Christmas old man<\/strong>” (\u5723\u8bde\u8001\u4eba – sh\u00e8ng d\u00e0n l\u01ceo r\u00e9n – Santa Claus)\u00a0and the “fire chicken<\/strong>” (\u706b\u9e21 – hu\u01d2 j\u012b – turkey). Although the Chinese government is doing its best to eradicate Chinglish<\/a>, thankfully they aren’t quite there yet. In many tourist sights, you’ll find an abundance of hilarious Chinglish signs. You’ll also find plenty of Chinglish on menus of restaurants, and you can even find it printed on shirts in local markets. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to laugh your ass off at ridiculous Chinglish all around China, I’ve built up a collection of some of my favorite photos from my years of living here.
