{"id":989,"date":"2010-06-03T02:24:38","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T02:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/?p=989"},"modified":"2010-06-02T09:13:36","modified_gmt":"2010-06-02T09:13:36","slug":"comparing-ideas-or-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/chinese\/comparing-ideas-or-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparing Ideas or Actions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier I discussed how to compare people, places, and things.\u00a0 What about comparing ideas?<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the first example, which follows from the previous illustrations of how to make comparisons using \u6bd4 (bi3).<\/p>\n<p>Swimming&#8217;s more fun than dancing.<\/p>\n<p>\u6e38\u6cf3\u6bd4\u8df3\u821e\u597d\u73a9 (you2yong3 bi3 tiao4wu3 hao3wan2 &#8211; lit. swimming [compare] dancing fun)<br \/>\nTo form a negative comparison, we would use the following structure: \u8df3\u821e\u6ca1\u6709\u6e38\u6cf3\u597d\u73a9 (tiao4wu3 mei2you3 you2yong3 hao3wan2 &#8211; lit. dancing [doesn&#8217;t have] swimming fun)<\/p>\n<p>How do we compare ideas and form the comparison into a suggestion?\u00a0 One method is below:<\/p>\n<p>\u4e0e\u5176\u8df3\u821e\u4e0d\u5982\u6e38\u6cf3. yu3qi2tiao4wu3 bu4ru2 you2yong &#8211; swimming is better than dancing.\u00a0 Note that the activity which is worse is located at the front of the sentence, similar to English constructions like\u00a0 &#8220;Don&#8217;t ___ when you can ____\/ Why ___when you can ____?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another way to set up the comparison of an action or idea is to use the \u4e0d\u5982 construction by itself, see below:<br \/>\n\u8df3\u821e\u4e0d\u5982\u6e38\u6cf3 tiao4wu3 bu4ru2 you2yong3- lit. dancing not as good as swimming.<\/p>\n<p>If you can put these into practice, your communicative ability in Chinese will reach yet another level!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier I discussed how to compare people, places, and things.\u00a0 What about comparing ideas?
