We\u2019re taking a look at one lesson each month to find out why language professionals are maintaining proficiency on the job with weekly Cohort lessons.<\/p>\n<h1>What are CL-150 Cohorts?<\/h1>\n<p>If you\u2019re not familiar, CL-150 Cohorts are weekly lesson streams designed specifically for USG language professionals maintaining proficiency on the job. Each lesson provides a 2-hour \u201cworkout\u201d at a specific ILR level, based on a professionally relevant, authentic source.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about CL-150 Cohorts and complete a sample lesson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparent.com\/government\/cohorts.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Cohort Lesson of the Month<\/h1>\n<p><strong>This month\u2019s featured lesson, <a href=\"https:\/\/cl150.transparent.com\/cl_150\/game\/link?type=lesson&amp;id=063b1691-a6e3-4e60-9bd1-bb476939e84e&amp;activity=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BRICS Summit<\/a>, comes from the Russian ILR 2 Cohort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This lesson focuses on two skills that ILR 2 level learners need to practice continuously: listening comprehension and the Russian case system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-422\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/cl-150-bulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/12\/Cohort-of-the-Month-November-2019-1024x525.png\" alt=\"CL-150 Cohort lesson Russian ILR 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/cl-150-bulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/12\/Cohort-of-the-Month-November-2019-1024x525.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/cl-150-bulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/12\/Cohort-of-the-Month-November-2019-350x179.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/cl-150-bulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/12\/Cohort-of-the-Month-November-2019-768x393.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/cl-150-bulletin\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2019\/12\/Cohort-of-the-Month-November-2019.png 1419w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><small>Focus on Listening Comprehension<\/small><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>All Cohort lessons include audio, usually recorded by the lesson author, along with a dedicated Listening Comprehension activity. But Tanya, the author of this lesson, wanted to provide extra listening practice:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Slide Show activity, I included a link to a video clip from a Russian news broadcast on the topic as a supplemental listening exercise. Learners can hear about the BRICS summit in more detail while they practice listening to a range of native Russian speakers. Some questions are straightforward and factual, asking about member countries and dates. Others are more thematic, challenging learners to think about what they\u2019ve heard rather than combing through the text for word-for-word answers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><small>Focus on Russian Grammar<\/small><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just like learners need to continuously practice and improve listening skills, they also need to continuously review grammar\u2014even concepts previously learned in class. That\u2019s why Tanya provided opportunities to practice noun-adjective agreement both explicitly and implicitly throughout the lesson:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearners at ILR 2 should already be comfortable with case, but it\u2019s complicated. There\u2019s lots of endings and agreements to memorize, so it\u2019s important to keep practicing and applying it to new vocabulary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Table, learners are presented with a list of Russian adjectives used in the lesson text in various cases. The multiple-choice answers in the Reading Comprehension activity and the blanks in Fill in the Blank feature the noun-adjective pairs.
