{"id":1011,"date":"2013-12-14T11:41:13","date_gmt":"2013-12-14T11:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/?p=1011"},"modified":"2013-12-14T11:41:13","modified_gmt":"2013-12-14T11:41:13","slug":"oh-when-the-nisser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2013\/12\/14\/oh-when-the-nisser\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh When The Nisser\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, I promised you some more grammar, but I just have to show you this marching band of <b>nisser<\/b>, who brought December to town a handful of days ago:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oh When The Nisser...\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lRa6TTV8doA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Julemanden<\/b> (Father Christmas) was throwing <b>karameller<\/b> (caramels) \u2013 and <b>b\u00f8rnene<\/b> (the children) loved it! To the delight of many small <b>drenge<\/b> (boys), even <b>brandbilen <\/b>(the fire engine) came along, dressed, as always, in <b>r\u00f8d<\/b> (red) \u2013 the perfect colour for <b>julem\u00e5neden<\/b> (the Christmas month). The musicians with <b>nissehuer<\/b> (<i>nisse<\/i> or \u201dgoblin\u201d caps) were playing <b>julesange<\/b> (Christmas carols) and a few <b>b\u00f8rnesange<\/b> (children\u2019s songs), as in the clip, where they play a melody that is often accompanied by these lyrics:<\/p>\n<p><b>En elefant kom marcherende \/ hen ad edderkoppens fine spind \/ fandt at vejen var s\u00e5 int\u2019ressant \/ at den byder op endnu en elefant<\/b> (An elephant came marching \/ along the spider\u2019s fine web \/ found that the way was so interesting \/ that it invites yet another elephant.) The next time the song is sung, the verse changes to <b>To elefanter kom marcherende<\/b> (Two elephants came marching), and so it goes, with more and more elephants climbing the cobweb!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re in the city of \u00c5rhus, and <b>julelysene<\/b> (the Christmas lights) have just been <b>t\u00e6ndt<\/b> [tent] (lit, turned on). Then all the people in the city know that <b>julen n\u00e6rmer sig<\/b>. (Christmas is drawing closer).<\/p>\n<p>Denmark is cold and dark <b>om vinteren<\/b> (in the winter), so Christmas is much more than a religious celebration here. It\u2019s like a joyous break from everything that is dull and sad. People just can\u2019t wait to decorate their homes with red hearts, stars, candles and <b>julekalendere<\/b> (Christmas calendars).
