It\u2019s <b>Store bededag<\/b> [stoah BETHehdaay] (Great Prayer Day). Each year, on the fourth Friday after <b>p\u00e5sken<\/b> (Easter), people in Denmark have a nice day off. Although this holiday is a Danish speciality (it only exists here), I know no people who take the praying part seriously and actually do spend the day sending wishes to <b>Gud <\/b>[gooth]\u2026 Instead they \u2013 you guessed it! \u2013 <b>hygger sig<\/b> (have a good time). Special buns called <b>varme hveder<\/b> (\u201dhot wheaties\u201d) are eaten on this day, fresh from the <b>ovn <\/b>(oven), so crisp and hot that <b>sm\u00f8rret smelter<\/b> (the butter is melting).<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, the world tuned to <b>K\u00f8benhavn<\/b> as the Danish capital was hosting <a title=\"Tears of Gold\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2013\/05\/25\/tears-of-gold\/\"><b>Melodi Grand Prix<\/b><\/a> [melodEE grannPREE], or Eurovision Song Contest, as it is also known. Singers from several European countries strove to sway the judges and win the hearts of the Europeans. As strange as it may sound, many Danes still have a hard time accepting people with foreign roots as \u201dproper Danes\u201d. Basim\u2019s parents came to Denmark from Morocco, and some people just keep banging on about the guy\u2019s ethnicity. In March, Basim hit the nail on its head\u00a0in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.information.dk\/491957\">interview<\/a>: <b>Har du som indvandrer oplevet racisme i Danmark?<\/b> a reader of the paper Information asked him. \u201dHave you, as an immigrant, experienced any racism in Denmark?\u201d Basim\u2019s answer went like a lightning through all the social networks:<\/p>\n<p><b>Jeg er ikke indvandrer. Jeg har ikke indvandret til noget land.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(I\u2019m not an immigrant.
