Every year a handful of Danish language geeks k\u00e5rer \u00e5rets danske ord<\/b> (elect the Danish \u201dword of the year\u201d). This year, Sproglaboratoriet<\/b> (\u2019The Language Lab\u2019), a Danish radio programme, had nominated<\/a> the following twelve ord<\/b>:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Byhaver <\/b>(\u2019city gardens\u2019) <\/b>are small gardens that have become popular in Danish towns and cities. They may be shared by more than one owner, and folk<\/b> (people) are careful to ensure that every addition to their little piece-of-wilderness is \u00f8kologisk<\/b> (biodynamic) and milj\u00f8venlig<\/b> (\u2019enviromentally friendly\u2019).<\/p>\n

\u2022 Digital borger <\/b>(\u2019digital citizen\u2019) refers to the fact that e-mail and internet skemaer<\/b> (forms) are replacing letters between det offentlige<\/b> (public services\/the State) and borgerne<\/b> (the citizens) everywhere in Denmark. Just a couple of years ago people used to receive things like their selvangivelse <\/b>(tax form) in their postkasse<\/b> (letter box); now everything is done on Internettet<\/b> using NemID<\/b> [nehm ee deh] (\u2019Easy ID\u2019, a kind of password generator).<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ebola<\/b>.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Girafgate. <\/b>Do you remember the terrible killing of the giraffe Marius<\/a> back in February? Inspired by the American \u201dWatergate\u201d scandal, someone mixed Danish with English to create this new word\u2026\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2022 Hverdagssexisme<\/b> means \u2019everyday sexism\u2019. Some people, most often kvinder<\/b> (women), are still not treated with the respekt<\/b> they\u2019re entitled to according to Danish laws about ligestilling<\/b> (equality of status).<\/p>\n

\u2022 Inklusion. <\/b>There\u2019s a lot of talk about including immigrants better in the Danish society, including weak pupils better in Danish schools, and so on! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\u2022 Konkurrencestat <\/b>(\u2019competition state\/country\u2019). <\/b>I\u2019m not very much into politics, but whenever politicians bang on about Danes having to \u201dwork harder\u201d I imagine they have this word written all over their brains\u2026 Little Denmark competing against giant countries like Kina<\/b> and USA<\/b>. Wow.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Madspild<\/b> means \u201dwaste of food\u201d and is a problem everywhere in the world, not just in Denmark! \ud83d\ude42 That said, there\u2019s a group of people here, called skraldere<\/b> (dumpster divers), that try to save some of all the fresh mad<\/b> that supermarkeder<\/b> dump in containere<\/b> every day.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Mobilepay <\/b>is an app that makes it easy to transfer money between different kontoer<\/b> (accounts). This app has become so popular that it\u2019s become a verb: \u201dJeg mobilepay\u2019er dig lige 20 kroner.<\/b>\u201d (\u201dI \u2019mobilepay’ you 20 Kroner in a sec.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u2022 N\u00f8dl\u00f8gn<\/b> (\u2019necessity lie\u2019) is a kind of \u201dlittle lie\u201d you say to save yourself. If you\u2019re a guy with an overweight wife and she asks you if she looks fat, a n\u00f8dl\u00f8gn<\/b> could come handy\u2026 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

\u2022 Regnbueaktivist <\/b>(\u2019rainbow activist\u2019). Hm. I guess this refers either to gay\/lesbian activists, or Greenpeace activists! In 2013, the Danish Greenpeace activist Anne Mie Roer Jensen spent many weeks in a Russian prison because of a protest against Russians drilling for oil in the Arctic\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ret\u00e6nke<\/b> should\u2019ve been \u201dgent\u00e6nke<\/i><\/b>\u201d (re-think) in \u201dproper Danish\u201d; this looks like a fun mix of Danish and Latin languages!<\/p>\n

And the winner was \u2026 mobilepay<\/b>!<\/p>\n

Last year the winning word was the good, ole Danish word undskyld<\/b> (sorry!), so a number of people protested that an English word was elected\u2026 Well, in 2014, lots of people in Denmark mobilepay\u2019ede<\/b> (\u2019mobilepaid\u2019) each other, and talked about it, and that\u2019s the way words get popular, no matter how you feel about them. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
