Toasting in Denmark can be an unforgettable everyday experience: <b>Alle l\u00f8fter deres glas, kigger hinanden i \u00f8jnene og sk\u00e5ler h\u00f8jt.<\/b> (Everybody raises their glass, looks each other in the eyes and toasts loudly.) The roaring <b>sk\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5l<\/b> animates the whole room, even beyond the table of the celebrants. Then everybody takes a sip of <b>\u00f8llet<\/b> (the beer)\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>Alkohol<\/b> [ALcohhawl] has long been a part of Danish culture. It is often associated with <b>fester<\/b> (celebrations), <b>f\u00e6llesskab<\/b> (togetherness) and <b><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2011\/11\/12\/hygge\/\">hygge<\/a><\/b>. One of Denmark\u2019s most famous paintings \u2013 <b>Hip hip hurra! <\/b>(hip hip hurray!) by P.S. Kr\u00f8yer \u2013 gives a very good idea of this <b>stemning<\/b> (mood, atmosphere).<\/p>\n<p>France has <b>vin<\/b> [veen] (wine), Scotland has <b>whisky<\/b> and Denmark has <b>\u00f8l<\/b> (beer). That\u2019s the traditional tale. Nowadays, many Danes are skipping their dinner beer and drinking a glass of <b>r\u00f8dvin<\/b> (red wine) with their food instead. Danes continue, however, to feel a special <b>stolthed<\/b> (pride) about their beer. There\u2019s a <b>bajer [BAH-yoar] <\/b>(beer or lager) for any occasion: <b>h\u00e5ndbajer<\/b> (hand beer) when you\u2019re on the go, <b>fyraftensbajer<\/b> (closing time beer) when you\u2019ve finished working, <b>fredagsbajer<\/b> (Friday beer) when you\u2019re done with the week\u2019s work, <b>flyttebajer<\/b> (moving beer) when you\u2019re moving house and need a break from pushing all those heavy pieces of furniture around\u2026 Made a fool of yourself? There\u2019s a beer for that! Some foreigners get very worried when they see 14\u201316 year-olds experimenting with beverages in Danish alleys. Getting <b>fuld <\/b>[ful] (drunk) has become a part of growing up, but I don\u2019t know if young people in Denmark are any \u201dworse\u201d than teenagers in Germany or other nearby places. And even old people like <b>pensionister<\/b> [pangshawnISTor] (pensioners) may be everyday drinkers, enjoying for example a small glass of <b>Gammel Dansk<\/b> (\u201dOld Danish\u201d, a brandy) in the afternoon. It\u2019s no secret that Danes are among the EU\u2019s most passionate drinkers. While 25 % of people in the EU don\u2019t drink <a href=\"http:\/\/www.information.dk\/304957\">any alcohol<\/a>, only 7 % of all Danes are <b>afholdende<\/b> (abstinent). It\u2019s not easy to say <b>nej tak<\/b> (no thanks!) when all your friends would like to share a <b>drink<\/b> with you!<\/p>\n<p>What do you think? Is there too much <b>druk<\/b> (\u201dexcessive alcohol drinking\u201d) in <b>Danmark<\/b>?
