Talking is king, but sometimes en god bog<\/b> (a good book) may be your best friend in your struggle to absorb the charming Danish language! Finding a bibliotek<\/b> [beebleeohTEHK] (library) is never a problem in Denmark, as even smaller towns use to have a public library. Most often, however, you will need a Danish address and\u00a0 personnummer<\/b> (civil registration number) in order to get a l\u00e5nerkort<\/b> (library card). Of course, you\u2019re always welcome to stay at the library and read its books and aviser<\/b> (newspapers) on the spot. Many Danish libraries also have free extra services such as computere<\/b> and printere<\/b> and m\u00f8delokaler<\/b> (meeting rooms). Below are a couple of dialogues between a l\u00e5ner<\/b> (patron) and a bibliotekar<\/b> (librarian). (Please note that a direct translation between the two languages is not always possible.) Be aware that customer service in Denmark is increasingly web-based, so there\u2019s a chance the librarian might refer you to a hjemmeside <\/b>[YEMMehseetheh] (webpage, homepage) before the dialogue gets too lengthy! \ud83d\ude42 Most official webpages also come in an English-language version.<\/p>\n

1. L\u00e5nerkort<\/b> (Library Card)<\/p>\n

Librarian: Hej <\/b>(Hello).
\nPatron: Hej, jeg vil gerne l\u00e5ne den her bog. <\/b>(Hi, I would like to check out this book.)
\nLibrarian: Okay. Har du et l\u00e5nerkort?<\/b> (Sure! Do you have a library card?)
\nPatron: Nej<\/b> (No).
\nLibrarian: Okay. Hvis du vil have et, skal du oprette dig som bruger inde p\u00e5 vores hjemmeside. Jeg skal ogs\u00e5 lige se dit sygesikringsbevis.<\/b> (Okay. To get one, you\u2019ll need you to register as a user on our homepage. I\u2019ll also need to see your Danish health card.)
\nPatron: Fint. Det g\u00f8r jeg. Hvad giver l\u00e5nerkortet adgang til?<\/b> (Sure, I\u2019ll do that. What can I access with my library card?)
\nLibrarian: Det giver adgang til alle resourcerne i vores system, fra b\u00f8ger, lydb\u00f8ger, cd\u2019er, dvd\u2019er til online-tjenester som Transparent Language Online<\/a>.<\/b> (You can access any resource in our system, including books, audio books, CDs, DVDs, and even online services like Transparent Language Online.)

2. Udl\u00e5n<\/b> (Checking Out Materials)<\/p>\n

Patron: Hej! Jeg vil gerne l\u00e5ne Den Grimme \u00c6lling<\/i>, men jeg kan ikke finde den p\u00e5 hylden. <\/b>(Hi! I\u2019d like to check out The Ugly Duckling<\/i> but I can\u2019t seem to find it on the shelf.)
\nLibrarian: Lige et \u00f8jeblik, s\u00e5 tjekker jeg vores database. <\/b>(Okay, just one minute while I check our database.)
\nPatron: Okay. <\/b>(No problem.)
\nLibrarian: Jeg er ked af det, men bogen er udl\u00e5nt indtil n\u00e6ste uge. Vil du reservere den? <\/b>(I\u2019m sorry, that book has been checked out until next week. Would you like to put it on hold?)
