Whenever the tennis player Caroline Wozniacki or another Danish <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>kendis<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> [KENN-diss] (famous person) gets \u201dbig in the U.S.A.\u201d, Danish <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>journalister<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> [shoor-] (journalists) seem to get really busy. \ud83d\ude42 But some Danes get, as the saying goes, \u201dbig in Japan\u201d. Being on a family visit in Tokyo, I was surprised to find the following <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>LEGO-mand<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> in the busy Ikebukuro station:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd2_lille.png\" aria-label=\"Xd2 Lille 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1390\"  alt=\"xd2_lille\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd2_lille-300x225.png\"><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">I have no idea whether the customers at the Andersen <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>bageri<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> [bakery] know the meaning of the word <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2015\/10\/16\/can-danish-hygge-save-the-world\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>HYGGE<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">, but it did appear throughout the shop as a kind of magical formula, apparently. \ud83d\ude42 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>De ansatte<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> [dee ANNsatteh] (the employees) were wearing little <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>Dannebrog<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> flags on their red uniforms, while receiving <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>betaling<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (payment) for vaguely \u201dDanish-ish\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>br\u00f8d og kager<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (breads and cakes). When the lady at the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>kasse<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (counter) got aware of the nationality of my companion and myself, she smilingly offered us an extra bow. As far as I can tell, the Tokyo concept of \u201dDanishness\u201d (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>danskhed<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">) seems to be linked to creamy cakes and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>s\u00f8de ting<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (sweet things):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd3_lille.png\" aria-label=\"Xd3 Lille 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1391\"  alt=\"xd3_lille\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd3_lille-300x225.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">A Japanese woman in her twenties told me that most of her compatriots know <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>Den Lille Havfrue<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (The Little Mermaid), often from the Disney version of the H.C. Andersen <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>eventyr<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (fairytale). Other than that, few Japanese know anything about Danish culture or Denmark, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>bortset fra at det ligger i Europa<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (besides that it\u2019s situated in Europe). Some may have heard though, she told me, that Denmark is a \u201dvery happy\u201d country. Of course, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>dansk<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>design<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> is also found in Tokyo\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b> butikker <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">(stores).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd4_lille.png\" aria-label=\"Xd4 Lille 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1392 alignright\"  alt=\"xd4_lille\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2016\/05\/xd4_lille-300x225.png\"><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">The next time you\u2019re in Copenhagen, cross the street in front of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>hovedbaneg\u00e5rden<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (the central station). With a bit of house-scanning, you should find a Japanese Andersen bakery! There you can read the fascinating story about a young Japanese man who went to Denmark and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>forelskede sig i landet<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (fell in love with the country). When he later returned home, he founded his own Danish-style bakery chain and branded it with the most famous Danish <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>efternavn<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Palatino-Roman,serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"> (surname) on earth.
