It\u2019s no wonder that many language courses are quick to introduce a few colours. Here are the basic ones in Danish \u2013 can you guess the meaning of the words?<\/p>\n<p>1 <b>r\u00f8d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>2 <b>bl\u00e5<\/b><\/p>\n<p>3 <b>gul<\/b><\/p>\n<p>4 <b>gr\u00f8n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>5 brun<\/b><\/p>\n<p>6 <b>orange <\/b>[oRANGSHeh]<\/p>\n<p>7 <b>lilla<\/b><\/p>\n<p>8 <b>sort<\/b><\/p>\n<p>9 <b>hvid <\/b>[veeth]<\/p>\n<p>10 <b>gr\u00e5<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yes, that\u2019s right: <i>red \u2013 blue \u2013 yellow \u2013 green \u2013 brown \u2013 orange \u2013 lilac \u2013 black \u2013 white \u2013 grey<\/i>. Except for <b>gul <\/b>and <b>sort<\/b>, I guess they\u2019re somewhat transparent for an English speaker. Another common word is <b>lyser\u00f8d<\/b> which means \u201dlight red\u201d or \u201dpink\u201d \u2013 you\u2019ll even hear some Danes using the English word <b>pink<\/b> with a Danish twist (so it sounds like \u201dpenk\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.danskesange.dk\/showsong.asp?pageno=1&amp;sstring=&amp;ss1=&amp;ss2=&amp;ss3=&amp;mykey=120\"><b>Se min kjole<\/b><\/a> (Look at my dress) is a children\u2019s song which uses a lot of colour words:<\/p>\n<p><b>Se min kjole, den er gr\u00f8n som gr\u00e6sset<\/b><br \/>\n<i>Look at my dress, it\u2019s green like the grass<\/i><br \/>\n<b>alt hvad jeg ejer, det er gr\u00f8nt som den.<\/b><br \/>\n<i>all that I own is green like it.<\/i><br \/>\n<b>Det er fordi, jeg elsker alt det gr\u00f8nne<\/b><br \/>\n<i>that\u2019s because I love everything green,<\/i><br \/>\n<b>og fordi en j\u00e6ger er min ven.<\/b><br \/>\n<i>and because a hunter is my friend.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Se min kjole, den er bl\u00e5 som havet <\/b><i>(the ocean)<\/i><br \/>\n<b>alt hvad jeg ejer, det er bl\u00e5t som den.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Det er fordi, jeg elsker alt det bl\u00e5<\/b><br \/>\n<b>og fordi en s\u00f8mand <\/b><i>(sailor)<\/i> <b>er min ven.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Se min kjole, den er r\u00f8d som rosen <\/b><i>(the rose)<\/i><br \/>\n<b>alt hvad jeg ejer, det er r\u00f8dt som den.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Det er fordi, jeg elsker alt det r\u00f8de<\/b><br \/>\n<b>og fordi et postbud <\/b><i>(postman) <\/i><b>er min ven.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Se min kjole, den er hvid som sneen <\/b><i>(the snow)<\/i><b>,<\/b><br \/>\n<b>alt hvad jeg ejer, det er hvidt som den.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Det er fordi, jeg elsker alt det hvide<\/b><br \/>\n<b>og fordi en m\u00f8ller <\/b><i>(miller) <\/i><b>er min ven.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Se min kjole, den er sort som kullet <\/b><i>(the coal)<\/i><b>,<\/b><br \/>\n<b>alt hvad jeg ejer, det er sort som den.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Det er fordi, jeg elsker alt det sorte<\/b><br \/>\n<b>og fordi en skorstensfejer <\/b><i>(chimney sweep)<\/i><b><i> <\/i>er min ven.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve left out the first and the last verses (you can read them here). Maybe you\u2019ve remarked that the word <b>bl\u00e5<\/b>,<b> <\/b>unlike the other colour words used here, never gets an <b>e<\/b> ending attached.
