Unlike julen <\/b>(Christmas), the Danish nyt\u00e5rsfejring<\/b> (New Year Celebration) hasn\u2019t got a lot of traditioner<\/b>. People get together, eat, drink (remember to say sk\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5l!<\/b>) and watch fyrv\u00e6rkeri<\/b>. (Each year a small number of people get hurt by raketter<\/b> \u2013 rockets.) One fixed tradition, however, is the televised nyt\u00e5rstale<\/b> (New Year\u2019s speech) by Queen Margrethe.<\/b> Here are a few typical cuts from last year\u2019s speech<\/a>, to give you an idea\u2026 Godt nyt\u00e5r!<\/b><\/p>\n

Et \u00e5r er ved at rinde ud; i morgen st\u00e5r et nyt for d\u00f8ren.<\/b> (A year is about to end; tomorrow a new will be \u201dstanding at the gate\u201d\u2026) Mange flygtninge har s\u00f8gt beskyttelse i Danmark og det er vores ansvar at hj\u00e6lpe. Det er en stor opgave, men ogs\u00e5 et vanskeligt dilemma, for hvor mange kan vi hj\u00e6lpe og hvordan hj\u00e6lper vi bedst? <\/b>(Many refugees have searched protection in Denmark and it is our responsibility to help. It\u2019s a huge task, but also a difficult dilemma, for how many can we help and how do we help in the best way possible? \u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

De fleste mennesker havde en mere barsk hverdag for to-tre generationer siden.<\/b> (Most people [in Denmark] led a harsher everyday life two-three generations ago\u2026) Alligevel kan det se ud, som om flere bekymrer sig mere om mindre. Spiser vi for meget? Spiser vi sundt nok? <\/b>(Still, it looks as if more people worry about less. Do we eat too much? Is our food healthy enough?\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

I \u00e5r har Prinsgemalen og jeg igen bes\u00f8gt Gr\u00f8nland. <\/b>(This year the Prince Consort and I have been visiting Greenland again\u2026) Vi siger begge: Tak for i sommer og \u00f8nsker hele det gr\u00f8nlandske samfund et godt nyt\u00e5r. <\/b>(We both say: Thank you for this summer and we wish the entire Greenlandic society a happy New Year!\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

Vi sender vores varmeste hilsener og bedste nyt\u00e5rs\u00f8nsker til alle p\u00e5 F\u00e6r\u00f8erne <\/b>(We send our warmest greetings and best New Year wishes to all people on the Faroes\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

I aften sender jeg ogs\u00e5 mine hilsener og tanker til alle danske, hvor i verden de end befinder sig. <\/b>(This evening I also send my greeting and thoughts to all Danes, wherever in the world they may be\u2026) Jeg sender ogs\u00e5 mine hilsener til de danske sydslesvigere. Ligesom det tyske mindretal nord for gr\u00e6nsen er de med til at g\u00f8re vort gr\u00e6nseland til et forbillede for andre gr\u00e6nselande. <\/b>(I also send my greeting to the Danes of Schleswig in Germany. Just like the German minority north of the border they\u2019re helping making our border region an example for other border regions\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n

I nat vender vi endnu et blad: Hvad venter der os? Vi m\u00e5 se p\u00e5 fremtiden med h\u00e5b, velvidende, at det nye \u00e5r kan bringe os gl\u00e6der s\u00e5vel som sorger, udfordringer s\u00e5vel som lykkelige stunder.\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Jeg \u00f8nsker for alle og for vort land, at de lykkelige stunder m\u00e5 blive de fleste og at vi kan m\u00f8de udfordringerne med fortr\u00f8stning.\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Af hjertet: Godt nyt\u00e5r 2016!\u00a0<\/b><\/span>(Tonight we turn another page: What is awaiting us? We must look upon the future with hope, with the knowledge that the new year may bring us both joys and sorrows, challenges and happy moments.
