Dr\u00f8mte mig en dr\u00f8m i nat\u2026 <\/b>(Dreamt myself a dream tonight\u2026) One of the oldest songs in the Danish language (click here<\/a> to listen to it) starts with a <\/b>reflexive verb. Since there is a difference between I wash myself<\/i> and I wash the dog<\/i>, speakers of many languages found a way to refer back to \u2026 themselves. A reflexive verb in Danish is used with the corresponding reflexive pronoun \u2013 for example at hygge sig<\/b> (to enjoy oneself, to have a good time, to be a part of the Danish hygge<\/b><\/a>):<\/p>\n

jeg hygger mig \u2013 vi hygger os<\/b><\/p>\n

du hygger dig \u2013 I hygger jer<\/b><\/p>\n

han, hun, man, den\/det hygger sig \u2013 de hygger sig<\/b><\/p>\n

Note that sig<\/b> corresponds to either himself, herself, oneself, itself or themselves <\/i>in English.<\/p>\n

Some of these verbs are used both with and without the reflexive pronoun<\/a>: Jeg vasker mig.<\/b> Jeg vasker hunden. <\/b>Many of them, however, are reflexive 99% of the time, and may even change their meaning if you forget the extra pronoun \u2013 be ware! Han rejser sig <\/b>(He gets up) isn\u2019t the same as Han rejser <\/b>(He\u2019s travelling). A few verbs are always <\/i>reflexive, such as at skutte sig<\/b> (to shake oneself). Here are some very common Danish reflexive verbs:<\/p>\n

at skynde sig<\/b> \u2013 to hurry<\/p>\n

at gl\u00e6de sig<\/b> \u2013 to look forward to<\/p>\n

at kede sig<\/b> \u2013 to be bored<\/p>\n

at s\u00e6tte sig<\/b> \u2013 to sit down<\/p>\n

at koncentrere sig<\/b> \u2013 to focus<\/p>\n

at gifte sig <\/b>\u2013 to marry<\/p>\n

at forelske sig<\/b> \u2013 to fall in love<\/p>\n

at bl\u00e6re sig<\/b> \u2013 to show off<\/p>\n

at pynte sig<\/b> \u2013 to adorn oneself<\/p>\n

at skamme sig <\/b>\u2013 to be ashamed<\/p>\n

at \u00f8ve sig<\/b> \u2013 to practice<\/p>\n

at slanke sig<\/b> \u2013 to slim, to get slimmer<\/p>\n

at \u00f8nske sig<\/b> \u2013 to wish<\/p>\n

at more sig<\/b> \u2013 to have fun<\/p>\n

at v\u00e6nne sig<\/b> \u2013 to get used to<\/p>\n

at blande sig<\/b> \u2013 to meddle (bland dig uden om! <\/b>mend your own business!)<\/p>\n

at interessere sig for<\/b> \u2013 to be interested in<\/p>\n

at beslutte sig<\/b> \u2013 to make up one\u2019s mind<\/p>\n
