Even though it\u2019s only <b>for\u00e5r<\/b> (Spring, literally \u201dfore-year\u201d), Danes <i>love<\/i> ice cream, and the combination of temperatures around <b>fjorten grader<\/b> (fourteen degrees of Celsius) or so and a bit of <b>sol<\/b> (sun) is an excellent excuse to buy yourself a cold treat!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Every <b>marts<\/b> (March) when the ice season really starts, you\u2019ll see a <b>lang k\u00f8<\/b> (long line) of people outside an ice cream shop somewhere, patiently waiting to get <b>en gratis is<\/b> (a free ice cream)! Many specialised shops are giving away <b>is<\/b> for free on their opening day, and as Danes love free stuff even more than their ice cream, you have to show up early if you want to have a chance before <b>fryseren<\/b> (the freezer) is <b>tom <\/b>(empty)! For example, on March 21<span class=\"s1\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span> the company Frisko gave away 100,000 <b>gratis is <\/b>all over the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Vil du have en ispind eller en isvaffel?<\/b> (Would you like an ice cream on a lolly stick or in a cone?) <b>Er du til fl\u00f8deis eller sodavandsis? <\/b>(Do you prefer [creamy] ice cream or [watery] ice lolly?) (Image from <a href=\"https:\/\/openclipart.org\/detail\/211342\/ice-cream\">Open Clipart<\/a>.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>L\u00e6kkersultne danskere<\/b> (Danes fancying something delicious to eat) often go for the creamy <b>Magnum-is <\/b>[MAOOnum-eece] that have a thick cover of very tasty <b>chokolade<\/b>. Another favourite, especially when the sun is scorching, is a big <b>softice <\/b>[SOFTeyes]<b> <\/b>(soft ice \u2013 for some reason, there doesn\u2019t exist a proper Danish word for this; only the spelling has been changed a bit). Some places you can get your <b>softice<\/b> with <b>guf <\/b>[gawf], which I haven\u2019t seen in any other countries. It\u2019s a kind of pink, sweet, thick sauce \u2013 you should try it out. \ud83d\ude42 Be careful, though, as a <b>softice <\/b>tends to melt away really quickly!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Danes sometimes discuss ice cream names (yes, really!) For example, some people think the name <b>K\u00e6mpe Eskimo<\/b> (Huge Eskimo) is racist and should be changed. Other people think there should be more Danish ice cream names instead of English ones, which are invading the <b>iskiosker<\/b> (ice cream kiosks) everywhere\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For those Danes who just can\u2019t wait for the spring to fill the streets, there even is a home-delivery ice-cream service! The company <b>Hjem-is<\/b> [yem-eece] famously criss-crosses Denmark in their bright blue vans loaded with everything ice-cream related. When one of the cars is entering a <b>villakvarter<\/b> (residential neigbourhood), the driver <b>ringer med klokken<\/b> (rings a bell), and parents get busy to secure some <b>is<\/b> to their eager <b>b\u00f8rn <\/b>(children).
