In Denmark, the nearest <b>slikbutik<\/b> (candy shop) is never far away. In <b>supermarkedet<\/b>, <b>k\u00f8bmanden<\/b>, <b>kiosken<\/b>, <b>biografen<\/b> (the supermarket, the grocer\u2019s shop, the kiosk, the cinema) \u2013 everywhere <b>folk<\/b> (people) happily buy <b>slik<\/b> (candy, sweets) to bring along or enjoy at the movies. Whether you\u2019re fighting to <b>f\u00e5 dit blodsukker op<\/b> (\u201dget up the blood sugar\u201d) or just want to spend a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2015\/10\/23\/danish-hygge-words\/\"><b>hyggelig <\/b><\/a>moment with your <b>venner<\/b> (friends), Danish <b>slik<\/b> does the trick. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Many Danes have <b>gode minder<\/b> (good memories) of getting <b>fredagsslik <\/b>(Friday candy) as kids \u2013 although one colleague recalled getting <b>ondt i maven<\/b> (stomach ache). Another colleague distinguished between <b>luksusslik<\/b> (luxury candy) and <b>\u201djunkieslik\u201d<\/b> (\u201djunkie\u201d candy). The first one, she said, is quality <b>slik<\/b> like <b>konfekt <\/b>(assorted chocolates), that you <b>nyder<\/b> (enjoy) when you really need to <b>fork\u00e6le dig selv<\/b> (give yourself a treat). The second kind is things like cheap <b>vingummi<\/b> (wine gum), that you just can\u2019t stop eating because you\u2019re a \u2026 <b>slikjunkie<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The word <b>slik<\/b> is related to the verb <b>at slikke <\/b>\u2013 to lick (of course, much Danish <b>slik <\/b>you also need to chew or suck, such as <b>tyggegummi<\/b>, chewing gum, and the giant <b>holdk\u00e6ftbolsje <\/b>= shut-up-candy!) <b>Snold<\/b> [snoll] is another common word for <b>slik<\/b>. When you <b>snolder<\/b> [snollo] you\u2019re out buying sweets! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Bland selv-slik <\/b>(\u201dmix yourself-candy\u201d) is exotic to people from Japan and some other countries. Instead of buying pre-packed candy, you mix your own <b>pose<\/b> (bag) of favourite sweets, which you pick from open boxes using a small <b>skovl <\/b>(shovel). You then weigh your bag on a <b>v\u00e6gt<\/b> (scales), and <b>prisen <\/b>(the price) is decided by the <b>v\u00e6gt<\/b> (weight \u2013 yes, that\u2019s a word with more than one meaning! \ud83d\ude42<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Hvad skal jeg v\u00e6lge? <\/b>(What should I pick?) There are lots of sweet possibilities for your <b>hygge<\/b> moment, <b>blandt andet<\/b> (among other things):<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>fl\u00f8deboller<\/b> (cream puffs, snowballs) \u2013 cakes or candy? No matter what you call the chocolate-covered, cream-filled beauties, they\u2019re an all-time Danish favourite!<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>chokolade<\/b> [shockoLATHeh]. Denmark is full of busy makers of both <b>lys og m\u00f8rk <\/b>(light and dark)<b> <\/b>chocolate.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>karameller<\/b> (caramels) are usually <b>meget s\u00f8de<\/b> (very sweet)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>vingummi <\/b>(wine gum) comes in many shapes and <b>farver<\/b> (colours). Especially the <b>vingummi <\/b>of the brand Haribo (no PR intended!) has become ingrained in Danish culture.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>bolsjer<\/b>\u00a0[bolshor] (drops) come in many flavours, and often have fun names like <b>\u201dspejderhagl\u201d<\/b> (scouts\u2019 hail) or \u201d<b>andemad\u201d <\/b>(duckweed).<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>slikkepinde<\/b> (lollipops) are <b>bolsjer<\/b> on a stick \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>lakrids <\/b>(liquorice) is a very Northern European thing (in my experience). If you\u2019re not used to the black \u201dgum\u201d in your culture, be careful: <b>Lakridser <\/b>are often not sweet at all, but rather strong or salty! Many Danish children know the story of the \u201dbacterium trolls\u201d <b>Karius og Baktus<\/b> (by Norwegian author Thorbj\u00f8rn Egner) \u2013 who are removed from a boy\u2019s teeth by <b>tandl\u00e6gen\u00a0<\/b>(the dentist). So, as the story points out, it just might be a good idea to <b>b\u00f8rste t\u00e6nder<\/b> (brush your teeth) between your <b>slik<\/b> sessions!
