Some would disagree and pick <b>katten <\/b>(the cat), or maybe even <b>skildpadden<\/b> (the turtle), <b>guldfisken<\/b> (the gold fish) or <b>kanariefuglen<\/b> (the canary), if you\u2019re that kind of person! Either way, <b>dyr<\/b> (animals) are <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2016\/10\/19\/danish-is-a-zoo\/\">fascinating<\/a> \u2013 and you need words to discuss them with your fellow humans. Here is a selection of <b>tamme og vilde dyr<\/b> (tame and wild animals) in Denmark:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>gris\/e<\/b> (pig\/s). Some say there are more <b>grise<\/b> in the country than Danes, which makes sense since Denmark exports a lot of <b>bacon<\/b>. The male pig is an <b>orne<\/b>, while the female one is called a <b>so<\/b> \u2013 <b>s\u00f8er<\/b> in the plural. (Funnily, <b>s\u00f8er<\/b> also means \u201dlakes\u201d, but I guess there\u2019s no situation where you could possibly confuse the two!) BTW, happy pigs are said to have <b>kr\u00f8lle p\u00e5 halen <\/b>(a curly tail).<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>k\u00f8er<\/b> (cows \u2013 <b>ko <\/b>in the singular) are hugely popular, and can be seen lots of places in the countryside. Check out the wild gallop the cows do when they\u2019re let loose in spring! \ud83d\ude42 A male cow is a <b>tyr<\/b> and a young one is a <b>kalv<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>f\u00e5r<\/b> (sheep) are far more common in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/02\/16\/danish-in-the-world\/\"><b>F\u00e6r\u00f8erne<\/b><\/a> (the Faroe Islands \u2013 associated with Denmark). Still, their <b>uld<\/b>\u00a0[ull] is essential for all those hipster sweaters! The male sheep is a <b>v\u00e6dder<\/b>. A Danish children song goes: <b>M\u00e6, b\u00e6 hvide lam, har du noget uld?<\/b> (Baa, baa white lamb, have you any wool?)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>r\u00e6ven <\/b>(the fox) sometimes takes your <b>h\u00f8ne, hane, kylling<\/b> (hen, rooster, chicken) or <b>kanin<\/b> [caNEEN] (rabbit). Most of the time, though, it mostly eats garbage.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>ulven<\/b> (the wolf) recently <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/10\/18\/ulv-ulv\/\">returned<\/a> to Denmark. Hate it or love it \u2013 in any case you\u2019ll have to be extremely lucky to catch a glimpse of one of the few Danish <b>ulve<\/b>!<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><b>egern, ugle, pindsvin, gr\u00e6vling, r\u00e5dyr, hjort<\/b> (squirrel, owl, hedgehog, badger, roe, deer). The Danish wilderness is full of beasts stranger than Pokemons.
