Late summer is a time when some people start feeling bored \u2013 kids are tired of their parents dragging them through <b>verden<\/b> (the world) on a jet-set <b>sommerferie<\/b> (summer holiday) and just want to go <b>hjem<\/b> [yem] (home), while the adults probably have started longing for their quiet <b>kontor<\/b> [konTOHR] (office)! \ud83d\ude42 Let\u2019s keep the worst <b>apati<\/b> [apaTEE] at bay by taking a look at <b>kedsomhed<\/b> (boredom) in Danish!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<b>Kedelig<\/b> is the common word for \u2019boring\u2019, and if you\u2019re into Danish sounds, the word isn\u2019t <i>that<\/i> dull\u2026 It contains the famous <b>bl\u00f8dt d<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/05\/11\/soft-ds-are-not-hard\/\">soft d<\/a>), that certain learners of Danish walk around the whole day trying to pronounce, making more and more \u201dpukey\u201d sounds at the back of their <b>tunge<\/b> (tongue)! \ud83d\ude42 To untrained ears the rare consonant may sound like an L, but you\u2019ll get far more success if you can pretend it\u2019s exactly the same \u2019th\u2019 sound as in <i>mother<\/i>. So, [KE<i>TH<\/i>e-lee] should do the trick! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Kedelig<\/b> obviously gets the same <strong>e-<\/strong> or <strong>t-<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/02\/11\/getting-the-jigsaw-right\/\">ending<\/a> as any Danish adjective: <b>Jeg er s\u00e5 tr\u00e6t af nyhederne, de er virkeligt kedelige!<\/b> (I\u2019m so tired of the news, they\u2019re really boring!)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Gab!<\/b> (Yawn!) To tell your Danish friends you\u2019re bored, \u2019I bore myself\u2019 is the expression to use (do take care that you don\u2019t end up being a bore to the others instead!): <b>Jeg keder mig<\/b>. And if you\u2019re worried about your friend sitting too long <b>i solen<\/b> (in the sun) saying nothing, perhaps you can ask <b>Keder du dig?<\/b> (\u2019Do you bore yourself\u2019 = Are you bored?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yes, <b>at kede sig<\/b> (\u2019to bore oneself\u2019 = to be bored) is a reflexive verb in Danish. That means, you\u2019d also say <b>hun keder sig<\/b> (she\u2026), <b>vi keder os<\/b> (we\u2026), <b>keder I jer?<\/b> (are you guys feeling bored?) Sure, you can also use the verb <b>at kede<\/b> about being boring to someone else, but that\u2019s not so normal. \ud83d\ude42 <b>G\u00e5 din vej, du keder mig!<\/b> (Go away, you bore me!) is something an <b>eventyr<\/b> (fairytale) princess would say to a boring <b>frier<\/b> (suitor). \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Jeg h\u00e5ber det her ikke var for kedeligt!
