D\u00f8ren g\u00e5r op.<\/strong> (The door opens.) <strong>Velkommen til et meget gennemsnitligt dansk hus!<\/strong> (Welcome to a very average Danish house!) Because of <strong>klimaet<\/strong> (the climate), a lot of family &amp; social life in Denmark happens indoors. Let\u2019s go for a walk in the different <strong>v\u00e6relser<\/strong> (rooms).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entr\u00e9en<\/strong> (the hallway) is where you \u2013 let\u2019s listen to the word \u2013 enter\u2026 There are often a <strong>knager\u00e6kke<\/strong> (coat rack) where you can <strong>h\u00e6nge dit t\u00f8j<\/strong> (hang your clothes). It\u2019s customary to take off your <strong>sko<\/strong> (shoes) before proceeding\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gangen <\/strong>(the corridor) links the various <strong>rum<\/strong> (another word for <em>rooms<\/em>). Some houses have <strong>flere etager<\/strong> (more than one floor), and may have a <strong>trappe<\/strong> (staircase) leading down to a <strong>k\u00e6lder<\/strong> (cellar, basement) or up to a <strong>loft<\/strong> (loft).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stuen<\/strong> (the living room) is were you\u2019ll probably spend most of your time as a <strong>g\u00e6st<\/strong> (guest). There\u2019s a <strong>gulvt\u00e6ppe<\/strong> (\u201dfloor carpet\u201d) and various <strong>m\u00f8bler<\/strong> (pieces of furniture) \u2013 a <strong>sofa<\/strong>, a couple of <strong>l\u00e6nestole <\/strong>(armchairs), a <strong>bord<\/strong> [bor] (table), a <strong>bogreol<\/strong> (bookcase), a <strong>fjernsyn<\/strong> (tv). The room is full of <strong>pynt<\/strong> (decorations) such as <strong>planter<\/strong> (plants) and <strong>billeder<\/strong> (images). Danish <strong>stuer<\/strong> are typically very bright with <strong>hvide v\u00e6gge<\/strong> (white walls), design <strong>lamper<\/strong> (lamps) hanging down from <strong>loftet<\/strong> (the ceiling), and often a <strong>pejs<\/strong> (fireplace) as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>K\u00f8kkenet<\/strong> (the kitchen)\u2026 Well, there\u2019s so much going on in a kitchen, that I\u2019ll save it for a follow-up post! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sovev\u00e6relset<\/strong> (the sleeping room) is where you go to \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 <strong>sove<\/strong> (sleep). (As a guest, you\u2019ll maybe be lodged in a <strong>g\u00e6stev\u00e6relse<\/strong> \u2013 guest room.) There\u2019s a <strong>seng<\/strong> (bed) and maybe some <strong>skab\/e<\/strong> (cupboard\/s) such as a <strong>garderobe<\/strong> (wardrobe). In <strong>sengen<\/strong> (the bed) you sleep on a <strong>lagen <\/strong>(sheet) and a <strong>pude<\/strong> (pillow) beneath a <strong>dyne<\/strong> (duvet).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Badev\u00e6relset<\/strong> (the bathroom) is the place to take a <strong>brusebad<\/strong> (shower) or a <strong>karbad<\/strong> (\u201dtub bath\u201d) in a <strong>badekar<\/strong> (bathtub). You shower with <strong>s\u00e6be<\/strong> (soap) and <strong>shampoo<\/strong>. When you\u2019re done, you <strong>t\u00f8rrer<\/strong> yourself with a <strong>badeh\u00e5ndkl\u00e6de<\/strong> (bath towel). Of course, on the wall there\u2019s also a <strong>spejl<\/strong> (mirror) for you.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of homes even have a <strong>have<\/strong> (garden), a <strong>garage<\/strong> for <strong>bilen<\/strong> (the car), an <strong>altan<\/strong> (balcony) and maybe a <strong>barnev\u00e6relse<\/strong> (nursery, kid\u2019s room). <strong>Hvor er wc\u2019et? <\/strong>(Where\u2019s the toilet?) Sorry, how could I forget?
