Asking about somebody\u2019s f\u00f8dselsdag<\/strong><\/a> [FO<\/em>SLsdaay] (birthday) might not be the first thing you do. Still, when the topic does pop up, it\u2019s good to be prepared! \ud83d\ude42 Otherwise, the knowledge of how to say datoer<\/strong> (dates) could come handy when planning \u2026 dates.<\/p>\n

As you probably know, there are tolv m\u00e5neder<\/a><\/strong> [toll MAWnethor] (twelve months), also in Denmark! (Even if the dark season sometimes does feel like one single, neverending month of cold and rain!) The names are quite similar to the English ones, except that they don\u2019t start with a capital letter (unless at the beginning of a new sentence!)<\/p>\n

As you can see, writing<\/em> dates in Danish is p\u00e6relet<\/strong> (easy-peasy) \u2013 even easier than in English! \ud83d\ude42 In order to pronounce them, however, we need ordenstallene<\/strong> (the cardinal numbers) from 1 to 31. Since we\u2019re talking about specific dates (\u201dthe<\/em> 6th of January\u201d rather than \u201da<\/em> 6th of January\u201d), all the ordenstal<\/strong> take the ending -e<\/strong> \u2013 so it is f\u00f8rste<\/strong> instead of f\u00f8rst<\/strong>. (You do remember this ending<\/a> for adjectives etc. describing specific nouns, right? Think en r\u00f8d hat<\/strong> \u201da red hat\u201d vs. den r\u00f8de hat <\/strong>\u201dthe red hat\u201d.)<\/em><\/p>\n

\nsjette, syvende, ottende, niende, tiende<\/strong>
\nellevte, tolvte, trettende, fjortende, femtende<\/strong>
\nsekstende, syttende, attende, nittende, tyvende<\/strong>

Watch out:<\/em> Sometimes the word den<\/strong> (the) is dropped, especially when chatting informally. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
