Jeg gl\u00e6der mig i denne tid \u2013 nu falder julesneen hvid \u2013 s\u00e5 ved jeg, Julen kommer. <\/strong>(I\u2019m happy in this season \u2013 now the Christmas snow is falling white \u2013 then I know, Christmas is coming.) So begins Peters Jul<\/em> (Peter\u2019s Christmas), an old children\u2019s book that still colours the way Danes view Christmas\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Published by Johan Krohn in 1870, the illustrated bog<\/strong> [book] has become a Danish Xmas cult classic that keeps turning up again and again in Danish homes. I guess generally julen<\/strong> [yooln] is a nostalgic time for many Danes, where you take on your rose-coloured glasses and look back at the \u201dgood old days\u201d \u2013 before nyt\u00e5r<\/strong> (New Year) sets in and it\u2019s time to party and look forward. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a classical quote from the story to give you some idea of the mood. The main character, drengen <\/strong>(the boy) Peter, hears his bedstemor<\/strong> (grandmother) telling a story about Julemanden<\/strong> (Santa Claus):<\/span><\/p>\n

Et dejligt juletr\u00e6 han b\u00e6r’,
\ndet st\u00f8rste vist i skoven.
\nHans sk\u00e6g n\u00e5r lige til hans kn\u00e6er;

\ndet str\u00e5ler, og det skinner
\np\u00e5 n\u00e6sen og det hvide h\u00e5r
\nog p\u00e5 hans r\u00f8de kinder.

\nhvor alle bo, bestemt han ved,
\nderp\u00e5 kan vis man v\u00e6re<\/th>\n		A lovely Christmas tree he carries,
\nthe biggest, apparently, in the forest.
\nHis beard reaches him to his knees;
\nand on top of his hat
\na little Christmas candle is standing;
\nit\u2019s sparkling, and it\u2019s shining
\non his nose and his white hair
\nand on his red cheeks.
\nAnd up and down the streets
\nhe\u2019ll carry his tree around;
\nwhere everybody lives, he knows precisely,
\nthereof you can be certain.<\/th>\n		<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n

\ner glad for deres drenge,
\nimens de pynte julebord
\nog lys i tr\u00e6et h\u00e6nge,
\nda ler den gamle Julefar
\nog ind i stuen smutter.
\nSit lys fra hatten ned han ta’er,
\ndet funkler, og det futter;
\nmed det han hen til tr\u00e6et g\u00e5r
\nog nikker i det samme,
\nstraks fra hvert lille Lys der st\u00e5r
\nen klar og dejlig flamme.<\/td>\n		But if he hears that Dad and Mum
\nare fond of their boys,
\nwhile decorating their Christmas table
\nand hanging candles in their tree,
\nthen old Father Christmas laughs
\nand slips into the living room.
\nHis candle he takes down from his hat,
\nit sparkles and it burns;
\nwith it he walks to the tree
\nand nods in the same moment,
\nimmediately from each candle springs
