Det er en sv\u00e6r tid for mange mennesker. <\/strong>(It\u2019s a hard time for many people.) Men livet m\u00e5 g\u00e5 videre!<\/strong> (But life must go on!) M\u00e5ske kan du bruge noget af ventetiden p\u00e5 at l\u00e6re dansk?<\/strong> (Maybe you can spend some of the waiting time on learning Danish?) Here\u2019s some core vocabulary and a bit of information to help you and your loved ones stay safe and move forward towards brighter days.<\/p>\n

Virussen<\/strong> [VEERoosn] (the virus) causing all the trouble is called corona <\/strong>by most Danes, too. (Of course that little bastard\u2019s fancy nickname \u2013 which means crown in Latin<\/a> \u2013 is pronounced with a Danish twist. For example, the R is a slight rasp<\/a> at the back of your throat.)<\/p>\n

As far as I understand, coronavirus<\/strong> spreads fra person til person <\/strong>[pareSOHN] through those small dr\u00e5ber<\/strong> (drops) that come flying through the air whenever you nyser<\/strong> (sneeze), hoster<\/strong> (cough) or even snakker<\/strong> (talk). That\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial at holde afstand<\/strong> (to keep a distance) of 1-2m. Also, those droplets may easily get onto your h\u00e6nder<\/strong> (hands), and into your \u00f8jne\/n\u00e6se\/mund<\/strong> (eyes\/nose\/mouth) when you accidentally touch your face. Which is why it is meget vigtigt<\/strong> (very important) to avoid handshakes, and to keep your hands and your belongings clean. (Sigh, you can\u2019t even share a kram<\/strong> \u2013 hug\u2026 \ud83d\ude41 )<\/p>\n

Last week, the Danish PM Mette Frederiksen<\/strong> and her regering<\/strong> [reGEHRing] (government<\/a>) introduced tough measures to try to slow down smitten<\/strong> (the infection), appealing to Danes\u2019 sense of samfundssind <\/strong>(community spirit). As in many other lande<\/strong> (countries), public places where mennesker<\/strong> (people) normally meet have been shut, and everyone is asked to stay hjemme<\/strong> [yemmeh] (at home) as much as possible. Gr\u00e6nserne<\/strong> (the borders) have been closed, and people with symptoms are asked to g\u00e5 i karant\u00e6ne<\/strong> (go into quarantine). Everything, of course, is done to prevent people getting smittet<\/strong> (infected) \u2013 especially \u00e6ldre og svage<\/strong> (old people and weak ones), who might not survive den nye sygdom<\/strong> (the new disease). Also, the staffs at hospitalerne<\/strong> (the hospitals) can only take care of a limited number of patienter<\/strong> (patients) at a time.<\/p>\n

I g\u00e5r<\/strong> (yesterday), social life suffered another blow when the government announced that only groups of 10 or fewer persons were allowed to gather in public. Denmark\u2019s \u201dMother\u201d, Dronning <\/strong>(Queen) Margrethe 1.<\/strong> chimed in<\/a> with a heartfelt speech to the people, where she encouraged everybody to tage ansvar<\/strong> (take responsibility) and avoid getting together for things like birthday<\/a> celebrations. For hygge<\/a>–<\/strong>obsessed Danes that\u2019s quite a challenge, but most people do listen to the Queen and seem to do their best to be creative with home-schooling, online meetings and other ways to socialise on digital platforms. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Here are some of the tips<\/a> of the Danish Health Authority to save lives (language learners \u2013 be aware of the imperative<\/a> forms of the verbs! \ud83d\ude42 ):<\/p>\n

Vask dine h\u00e6nder tit eller brug h\u00e5ndsprit<\/strong> (Wash your hands frequently or use sanitisers)<\/p>\n

Host eller nys i dit \u00e6rme<\/strong> (Cough or sneeze into your sleeve)<\/p>\n

Begr\u00e6ns fysisk kontakt<\/strong> (Limit physical contact)<\/p>\n

V\u00e6r opm\u00e6rksom p\u00e5 reng\u00f8ring<\/strong> (Be aware of cleaning)<\/p>\n

\u00c6ldre og kronisk syge \u2013 hold afstand og bed andre tage hensyn<\/strong> (Elderly and chronically ill people \u2013 keep a distance and ask others to be attentive)<\/p>\n
