Jeg er normalt ikke til fodbold, men\u2026<\/strong> (I normally don\u2019t like football\/soccer, but\u2026) Recently, variants of that phrase have been buzzing around everywhere in the air of Danmark<\/strong>. Fodbold-EM<\/strong> [fothbolt-eh-em] (the European Football Championship) is upon us, and almost everybody has a good excuse to be excited! Farvel, nedlukning \u2013 goddag, kvartfinale!<\/strong> (Goodbye, lockdown \u2013 hello, quarter-final!)<\/p>\n

Den 12. juni<\/strong> (the 12th<\/span> of June), the world stopped. Suddenly, everybody from London to Moscow was talking about the Danish fodboldspiller <\/strong>(football player) Christian Eriksen<\/strong>. In the middle of Denmark\u2019s first kamp<\/strong> (match), against Finland<\/strong>, Eriksen collapsed! If you saw it, it\u2019ll probably be etched into your memory for a while. Eriksen\u2019s holdkammerater<\/strong> (team mates) p\u00e5 landsholdet <\/strong>(the national team) were standing around him, crying. Er han d\u00f8d<\/strong> (is he dead)? That evening, you could literally read the thoughts on the face of every fodbold-fan<\/strong> walking the streets where I live.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Eriksen came back to life. And now the Danish players had a reason to win \u2013 for Eriksen! First they beat Rusland<\/strong> (Russia), and no one believed their eyes. Then, five days ago, they tamed den walisiske<\/strong> drage<\/strong> (the Welsh dragon) and beat Wales<\/strong> 4\u20130. K\u00f8benhavn<\/strong> exploded with joy, and in every Danish by<\/strong> (town) ellevilde fans <\/strong>(fans wild with joy) were wearing r\u00f8dt og hvidt<\/strong> (red and white) and shouting: fire nul!<\/strong> [feereh nawl!] (Four nil!)<\/p>\n

Now, even people who normalt aldrig ser fodbold<\/strong> (normally never watch football) are eagerly anticipating kvartfinalen mod Tjekkiet<\/strong> (the quarter final against Czechia) on Saturday. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, the team of Christian Eriksen will be able to replicate the Danish success of 1992<\/strong> and become europamestre<\/strong> (European champions) once more?<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vi er r\u00f8de \/ vi er hvide \/ vi st\u00e5r sammen \/ side om side<\/strong> (We\u2019re red \/ we\u2019re white \/ we stand together \/ side by side \u2013 the most shouted part of a famous football song known as \u201dRe-Sepp-ten\u201d<\/em>)<\/p>\n
