Danes just can\u2019t stay away from vandet<\/strong> (the water) \u2013 even with temperatures approaching frysepunktet<\/strong> (the freezing point), they jump into havet<\/strong> (the sea)\u2026<\/p>\n

Vil du med ud at vinterbade?<\/strong> (Wanna go \u201dwinter-bathing\u201d?) The last few years, the Danes\u2019 interest in vinterbadning<\/strong> (winter bathing) has just exploded. For example, there were 25.000 organised vinterbadere<\/strong> (winter bathers) in 2011<\/a>. Today<\/a> there\u2019s more than 60.000! And that\u2019s just klubmedlemmer<\/strong> (members of a klub<\/strong>) \u2013 in my experience, lots of people take the icy plunge without being in a club\u2026<\/p>\n

Why would anybody want at neds\u00e6nke kroppen i iskoldt vand<\/strong> (to submerge their body in icy cold water)? Well, for most people it\u2019s only a matter of seconds. Then you rush up again from the sea, with dripping hair and g\u00e5sehud<\/strong> (gooseflesh), and speed into the sauna<\/strong> [saoo-nah]. And you\u2019re really happy the Finns invented such a dejligt varmt rum<\/strong> (deliciously warm room)!<\/p>\n

\u201dVed du hvem jeg m\u00f8dte i vinterbadet?\u201d <\/strong>(Do you know who I met in the winter bath?) For thousands of Danes, vinterbadning<\/strong> is not only about cleansing the pores of your skin \u2013 it\u2019s a way to meet venner<\/strong> (friends) and have det sjovt<\/strong> (have fun). After your shared kuldechok<\/strong> [KULLehshok] (cold shock), conversations flow quite naturally in the sauna.<\/p>\n

N\u00f8genbadning<\/strong> (nude bathing): No, you don\u2019t have to swim n\u00f8gen<\/strong> (naked) \u2013 there are clubs both for skinny-dippers and for those who feel more comfortable wearing badet\u00f8j <\/strong>(swimwear). But yes, in Denmark people generally seem to be less afraid<\/a> of nudity than in countries such as the U.S., and you can certainly find Danish saunas where kvinder og m\u00e6nd i alle aldre<\/strong> (women and men of all ages) couldn\u2019t care less that nobody is clothed.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know a lot about the health aspect, but it seems like<\/a> people who regularly vinterbader<\/strong> (go winter-bathing) are less syge <\/strong>(ill). Og man bliver i godt hum\u00f8r<\/strong> (and you\u2019re put in a good mood) \u2013 which is essential to get through the dark Danish winter.
