It can\u2019t really be translated. <span style=\"color: #999999\">(My dictionary suggests \u2019comfort, cosiness\u2019, but I\u2019d say that\u2019s only an approximation\u2026)<\/span> I asked some young Danish-speakers to tell the readers of this blog what <strong><a title=\"Hygge\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2011\/11\/12\/hygge\/\">hygge<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #888888\">(and its adjectival form <strong>hyggelig<\/strong>)<\/span> meant to them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Hashim<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2012\/03\/IMG_0169.jpg\" aria-label=\"IMG 0169 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-423\"  alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2012\/03\/IMG_0169-300x225.jpg\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"text-align: left\">I want to tell you about <strong>hygge<\/strong>. I\u2019m at a <strong>h\u00f8jskole<\/strong>\u00a0(folk high school) \u2013 we eat together, we learn Danish. (Of course, I\u2019m from another country!) Playing football together is <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> \u2013 and now I\u2019m learning how to play the guitar. Once in a while we also have a party \u2013 that\u2019s exciting and <strong>dejlig<\/strong> (pleasant, nice).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Isabella<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think it\u2019s <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> when you\u2019re out in the woods riding on your horse and the weather is nice. It\u2019s also <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> when you\u2019re sitting with your family in the sofa and you\u2019re drinking hot chocolate and eating <strong>boller <\/strong>(Danish\u00a0buns) or playing a game of <strong>ludo <\/strong>(parcheesi).\u00a0 It\u2019s <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> to go for a swim with someone from your class. And then drop by a restaurant afterwards, where you can sit and talk and the mood is good. It\u2019s <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> to be together with your classmates, to spend some quality time with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Sanne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-424\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2012\/03\/IMG_0167-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think it\u2019s really <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> when you\u2019re with you family, just talking, or eventually playing a game. And eating some good food during the evening. Sharing a good bottle of wine. And finally end the evening with a cognac or whatever you like. Some hot coffee or tea \u2013 whatever the family fancies. Just some quality time together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>L\u00e6rke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Hygge<\/strong> means a lot of things to me. Something about sitting around a hot fire. It\u2019s getting dark and you\u2019re sitting there with a beer or a warm cup of cofee or tea and having a <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> chat and someone is playing some live music on guitar or something. Or it may also be just sitting alone in your room with a warm blanket reading a good book and having some candles lit. It can also be <strong>hyggelig<\/strong> spending time with farm animals. When you\u2019re there with them, you just think \u2013 my, that\u2019s <strong>hyggelig<\/strong>, they are cute and nice and you stroke them\u2026 <strong>Hygge<\/strong> can be the companionship with other people or just your own company, and it can be \u2013 something that warms your heart.
