\nThe usual war cry of the Danish football fans didn\u2019t cause the stadion<\/strong> (stadium) in Kharkiv to soar yesterday. According to the media, very few Danes had taken the trip to Ukraine to watch Denmark\u2019s first match in the EM<\/strong> (Europamesterskabet \u2013 the European Championship of Football [soccer]). A friend of mine went to town \u201dto see Denmark lose\u201d, as he put it. Pitted against the Netherlands, one of the world\u2019s top football nations, the Danish landshold<\/strong> (national team) was bound to fail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet drengene<\/strong> (the boys), as the team is sometimes called, had some surprises up their sleeve. After twenty minutes on the bane<\/strong> (field), Simon Busk Poulsen passed the bold<\/strong> (ball) to Michael Krohn-Dehli. The player from Br\u00f8ndby, a Copenhagen team, then made a nice finte<\/strong> ([football] trick), tricking his way past three Dutch opponents, and surprisingly firing the ball into the m\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5\u00e5l<\/strong> [goal]!<\/span><\/p>\n

Krohn-Dehli\u2019s goal was something of a blow to the Dutch players. They kept having more chances than the Danes, but were unable to retake the lead. In Denmark the tv-seere<\/strong> (tv spectators, literally \u201dtv seers\u201d) were cheering with joy and disbelief. Noone had thought that Denmark would actually beat the Netherlands 1-0.<\/span><\/p>\n

There has been a lot of talk about this year\u2019s EM<\/strong> [eh-em], which is taking place in Poland and Ukraine. Some people have called for a boykot<\/strong> of the event. They say that the Ukrainian regering<\/strong> (government) have violated menneskerettighederne<\/strong> (the Human Rights), and that it was wrong for the government to put the politician Yulia Tymoshenko in f\u00e6ngsel<\/strong> (jail). Other people have said that boycotting the EM<\/strong> would be stupid, and that the only way to solve disagreements would be through dialog<\/strong> [diaLAW-W]. The Danish Minister of Culture, Uffe Elb\u00e6k, has taken this stance. He is representing Denmark in the EM<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Danish football supporters call themselves roligans<\/strong> \u2013 to stress that they are not violent hooligans<\/em>, but actually very rolig<\/strong> (calm). But this year the discussion at least has been quite vivid: How is Denmark going to gain any medalje<\/strong>, when placed in a group with three of Europe\u2019s top hold<\/strong> (teams) \u2013 Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal?<\/span><\/p>\n

The upcoming kamp<\/strong> (match) against Portugal will show if long-time tr\u00e6ner<\/strong> (coach) Morten Olsen really knows the answer, or if this unexpected victory against the Dutch was just pure held<\/strong> [hell] (luck). <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
