On this day, every Danish students\u2019 community with the tiniest bit of <strong>selvrespekt<\/strong> has its own <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong> [FREHdasbar]. The literal meaning of the word is \u2019Friday Bar\u2019. It is usually a place where you can buy a <strong>fad\u00f8l<\/strong> (draught beer) or three and sit down to enjoy the company of your friends in an atmosphere that just oozes Danish <strong><a title=\"That\u2019s hygge to me!\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/03\/10\/that-is-hygge\/\">hygge<\/a><\/strong>. With Kim Larsen, the Danish \u201dBob Dylan\u201d, watching on the wall, it can\u2019t go wrong\u2026<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2013 My name\u2019s Nichlas and I\u2019m studying <strong>dansk <\/strong>(Danish).<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 My name\u2019s Karoline and I too am studying Danish.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 My name\u2019s Anna and I\u2019m studying linguistics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How often do you come here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas and Anna: <\/strong>There\u2019s only been a couple of times when we\u2019ve not been at the <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline: <\/strong>During my three semesters here I haven\u2019t missed a single <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong>! Anna and I are even members of <strong>fredagsbarudvalget<\/strong> (the Friday bar committee).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you mix with people from other fields (than Danish and linguistics)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>It\u2019s quite common to bring people <strong>udefra<\/strong> (from the outside), we\u2019re fairly \u201d<strong><em>loose<\/em><\/strong>\u201d with that. I\u2019ve sometimes invited <strong>kammerater<\/strong> (pals) who were not university students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>There are a lot of people here, so you just don\u2019t go like \u201dwow! there\u2019s a newcomer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline: <\/strong>Even though Anna and I study different subjects we get together in <strong>fredagsbaren<\/strong> (the \u201dFriday bar\u201d). You create a network across different study and year groups because you are in this together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>I joined the bar committee because I wanted some more action; there isn\u2019t too much <strong>partystemning<\/strong> (party atmosphere\/mood) in linguistics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suppose you were exchange students\u2026 Would the <em>fredagsbar<\/em> be a good place to \u201dmeet the Danes\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t think so. My impression is that people <strong>h\u00e6nger ud<\/strong> (are hanging out) after the classes. They either stay or arrange to meet with their <strong>studiekammerater<\/strong> (fellow students) later on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline: <\/strong>It\u2019s probably not a good idea to come here all on your own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>Oh, you can! But that would require some serious social skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>Yeah, people are generally very open if you do take the initiative to approach them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>If you just present yourself and sit down and say \u201dHey, how are you, I\u2019ll give you a <strong>bajer<\/strong> (beer, lager)\u201d, I guess people will be easygoing enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline: <\/strong>At least you should be <strong>frisk p\u00e5<\/strong> (ready to\/fit for, literally \u201dfresh on\u201d) to take the initiative yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>There are many girls here at our faculty, so they can be a bit <strong><em>bitchy<\/em>. <\/strong>\ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>We\u2019ve got the <strong>l\u00e6kreste<\/strong> (most attractive, from <strong>l\u00e6kker<\/strong>, \u2019delicious, lovely, attractive\u2019) girls of the entire University!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>So here\u2019s the place to score somebody? <\/strong>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas, Karoline and Anna: <\/strong>It is!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline: <\/strong>The <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong> is a very intimate place, you know, it\u2019s not a huge party. Many people just come to drink a beer and relax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>And the bar already closes at midnight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s the place where you bump into foreigners on the dance floor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>But tonight there is a huge \u201dDanish party\u201d, we guess there\u2019ll be 600 people or something like that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you often have <em>temafester<\/em> (theme parties)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas, Karoline and Anna:\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, always!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s today\u2019s theme?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Karoline<\/strong>: \u201d<strong>Hatte sk\u00e6g(t) med briller.\u201d<\/strong> It\u2019s a word play. (\u2019Hats, beard [<strong>sk\u00e6g<\/strong>] with glasses\u2019 \u2013 which in Danish sounds like <strong>Ha\u2019 det sk\u00e6gt med briller<\/strong>, Have fun with glasses.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas<\/strong>: Put on a beard and some glasses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a <em>fredagsbar<\/em> you remember above others?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna: <\/strong>We had a Bollywood bar. A Bollywood dancer came to entertain us, it was great fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nichlas: <\/strong>The very first <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong> of the semester is always the most exciting, there are lots and lots of people here! Throughout the year, however, the <strong>fredagsbar<\/strong> is just a place where you can <strong>koble af<\/strong> (relax, literally \u2019uncouple\u2019) and discuss non-study things with your fellow students.
