Last year I told you about this <a title=\"Now Give That Cat a Blow!\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/2012\/02\/19\/now-give-that-cat-a-blow\/\">fun tradition<\/a>, where children all over Denmark\u00a0<strong>kl\u00e6der sig ud<\/strong>\u00a0(dress up) and pound a hanging barrel with a bat until the\u00a0<strong>slik<\/strong>\u00a0(candy) comes out. (This is called\u00a0<strong>at sl\u00e5 katten af t\u00f8nden<\/strong>, which roughly means \u201dbeating the cat out of the barrel\u201d. People say that many years ago, there used to be a living cat in the barrel\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Some children bring their\u00a0<strong>kostumer<\/strong>\u00a0to the street, and go\u00a0<strong>fra d\u00f8r til d\u00f8r\u00a0<\/strong>(from door to door) asking for sweets or\u00a0<strong>penge<\/strong>\u00a0(money). Sometimes they sing\u00a0<strong>Fastelavnsangen<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the Fastelavn song. The whole text runs like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fastelavn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>er mit navn,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>boller vil jeg have,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>hvis jeg ingen boller f\u00e5r,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>s\u00e5 laver jeg ballade.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2013\/02\/IMG_0943.jpg\" aria-label=\"IMG 0943 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-878\"  alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/danish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2013\/02\/IMG_0943-300x225.jpg\"><\/a>Boller op<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>og boller ned,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>boller i min mave,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>hvis jeg ingen boller f\u00e5r,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>s\u00e5 laver jeg ballade.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fastelavn<\/p>\n<p>is my name,<\/p>\n<p>buns I want,<\/p>\n<p>if I don\u2019t get any buns,<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll make\u00a0<strong>ballade<\/strong>\u00a0(trouble).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Buns up<\/p>\n<p>and buns down,<\/p>\n<p>buns in my stomach,<\/p>\n<p>if I don\u2019t get any buns,<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll make\u00a0<strong>ballade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sure,\u00a0<strong>danskere er vilde med at kl\u00e6de sig ud<\/strong>\u00a0(Danes love dressing up). If you study in Denmark you are guaranteed to be invited to a lot of<strong>temafester<\/strong>\u00a0(theme parties) with\u00a0<strong>udkl\u00e6dning<\/strong>\u00a0(dressing-up)! But I guess the bun part of the song is what most adults are looking forward to in connection with\u00a0<strong>fastelavn<\/strong>! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>fastelavnsboller<\/strong>\u00a0(Fastelavn buns) is a Danish speciality. You take a\u00a0<strong>bolle<\/strong>\u00a0made out of\u00a0<strong>lyst mel<\/strong>\u00a0(light flour, that means: a British or French kind of bun, not the Danish\u00a0<strong>grovboller<\/strong>\u00a0or coarse buns!) Then you\u00a0<strong>fl\u00e6kker<\/strong>\u00a0(split it with a knife) it in two halves. Whip some\u00a0<strong>fl\u00f8deskum<\/strong>\u00a0(whipped cream), and put it between the two bun parts (like a hamburger). Put some\u00a0<strong>flormelis\u00a0<\/strong>(icing sugar) on the top. Mmm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Many people also add\u00a0<strong>syltet\u00f8j<\/strong>\u00a0(jam) or\u00a0<strong>marcipan<\/strong>\u00a0to the cream. And if you really want\u00a0<strong>at g\u00e5 amok<\/strong>\u00a0(to run amuck) in\u00a0<strong>fastelavnsboller<\/strong>, just visit a Danish\u00a0<strong>bager<\/strong>\u00a0(baker).
