\nThis year, many danskere<\/strong> were following the American movie award show with a lot of sp\u00e6nding<\/strong> (excitement). Hvorfor?<\/strong> (Why?) Perhaps you noticed that a Danish film<\/strong> had been nominated in the category \u201dBest Foreign Language Film\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve been following this blog, it should be no overraskelse<\/strong> (surprise) that the nominee was En kongelig aff\u00e6re<\/a><\/strong> (A Royal Affair), the historical trekantsdrama<\/strong> (play about a \u201dtriangle\u201d relationship) directed by Nikolaj Arcel. The film had already won two \u201dSilver Bears\u201d in Berlin. It was also the fifth most watched<\/a> movie in Denmark in 2012, with 1 in every 10 Danes buying a biografbillet<\/strong> (cinema ticket) for it.<\/p>\n

Filmen bygger p\u00e5 en sand historie.<\/strong> (The film is based on a true story.) The 18th century konge<\/strong> (king) Christian 7th was somewhere between gal<\/strong> (mad) and sindssyg<\/strong> (insane, \u201dmentally ill\u201d). His wife, the English princess Caroline Mathilde, suffered a lot because of this. She found an understanding elsker<\/strong> (lover) in Johann Friedrich Struensee, the king\u2019s personal doctor. Soon the two lovers found ways to manipulate the king and get access to enormous power\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201dEn kongelig aff\u00e6re\u201d got excellent anmeldelser<\/strong> (reviews) in Danish media. Many journalists were especially impressed by Mikkel Boe F\u00f8lsgaard, who plays the king (he came straight from an actor\u2019s school and had no prior movie experience). Alicia Vikander, the film\u2019s dronning<\/strong> (queen), and the Danish superstjerne<\/strong> (superstar) Mads Mikkelsen, who plays Struensee, were also praised for their skuespil<\/strong> (acting).<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, \u201dEn Kongelig Aff\u00e6re\u201d did not win the prestigious statuette. The Oscar for best fremmedsprogede film<\/strong> went to \u201dAmour\u201d by William Haneke from Austria.<\/p>\n
