Danish media seem to be busy making sure that noone forgets that <strong>skuespiller<\/strong> (actor) Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is, well, a <strong>dansker<\/strong> (Dane)\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>avis<\/strong> (\u201da-VEEce\u201d, newspaper) <em>Information<\/em> [infore-mah-SHON] recently hit the nail on the head when they <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.information.dk\/456764\">skrev<\/a><\/strong> (wrote) that \u2026 Danes love reading about Danes! Especially those getting attention <strong>i udlandet<\/strong> (abroad, literally \u201din the outland\u201d)!<\/p>\n<p>Heard about the new series <em>Hannibal<\/em> broadcast on the US network NBC? Many people in Denmark have \u2013 because the <strong>hovedrolle<\/strong> (main character, literally \u201dhead role\u201d) is being played by \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 a Dane (Mads Mikkelsen). And what about the Copenhagen restaurant Noma, which has been <strong>k\u00e5ret til verdens bedste<\/strong> (chosen the world\u2019s best) a couple of times? We Danes like to think that since someone <strong>international<\/strong> [INternashoenaal] has called it so, then of course it must be the talk of the entire global village\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Selv om vi ikke er store, vil vi gerne l\u00e6se om, at vi er store,<\/strong> <em>Information<\/em> tells us. <em>Even if we aren\u2019t big, we would like to read about us being big.<\/em> According to the article, the stereotypical Dane suffers from a unique combination of <strong>storhedsvanvid<\/strong> (megalomania, literally \u201dgreatness madness\u201d) and <strong>mindrev\u00e6rdskompleks<\/strong> (inferiority complex). Michael B\u00f6ss, who\u2019s an expert on <strong>nationalisme<\/strong>, calls it the <strong>Lille Danmark<\/strong> (little Denmark) syndrome. He dates this <strong>f\u00f8lelse<\/strong> (feeling) to <strong>1814<\/strong>, when Denmark lost Norway to Sweden, and ceased to be a powerful European nation.<\/p>\n<p>So, the next time you meet a Dane abroad, remember to give him a hug and tell him you do know where Denmark is! If you\u2019re <strong>heldig<\/strong> (lucky), he might gradually <strong>t\u00f8 op<\/strong> (thaw out, literally \u201dthaw up\u201d), and start showing some genuine interest for <em>your<\/em> place of origin! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>How are things in your country?
