{"id":1176,"date":"2011-02-27T21:27:39","date_gmt":"2011-02-27T21:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2014-07-18T14:52:13","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T14:52:13","slug":"one-of-my-favorite-things-the-rietveld-schroderhuis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/one-of-my-favorite-things-the-rietveld-schroderhuis\/","title":{"rendered":"One of my favorite things:  the Rietveld Schr\u00f6derhuis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rietveld-Schroder house is, in my humble opinion, maybe the Netherlands\u2019 finest attraction.\u00a0 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Dutch architecture is, of course, its own course of study, and its reputation precedes it.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t need to be a design nerd to appreciate the Schr\u00f6der house, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rietveldschroderhuis.nl\/\">which is open to the public <em>Woensdag t\/m Zondag<\/em>, by reservation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1924, Truus Schr\u00f6der-Schr\u00e4der asked Gerrit Rietveld to build her her dream-house, and a dreamhouse is still very much what the Rietveld-Schr\u00f6der house feels like when you visit.\u00a0 Viewed from the outside, its modern planes impress but don\u2019t astonish:\u00a0 there are a lot of houses in Holland that have been built in the years since whose exteriors look a lot like this one.\u00a0 But inside, the Rietveld-Schr\u00f6der house induces childlike awe.\u00a0 It\u2019s a house that combines practicality with play, which is perhaps one way to describe the country in which it was built.<\/p>\n<p>The entire upstairs level can be divided into rooms, or can be left open; it\u2019s ruled by panels that shift the space into the shape desired by its inhabitant(s).\u00a0 It\u2019s sad, actually, to tour the house and to know that no one is enjoying its many secrets on a daily basis;
