Making and receiving a phone call in Dutch is a natural next step when learning Dutch or living in the Netherlands as a non-native speaker.\u00a0 It can be intimidating at first but the information below should help you out.<\/p>\n

Making and Receiving a Phone Call<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you call someone in the Netherlands, you may notice that most people just answer the phone with his\/her name or their name with met<\/em> before it, \u201cMet Geerd Boer\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 The equivalent of the greeting \u201chello\u201d is typically not used.\u00a0 It is also common when telephoning someone else, especially a business or service, to introduce yourself, \u201cGoedemorgen, uw spreekt met Geerd Boer\u201d<\/em> before making your request.<\/p>\n

Understanding or Not<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As a non-native speaker it can be a challenge communicating via the telephone, as you are missing out on the visual cues and expressions normally available in face-to-face communication.\u00a0 Some phrases that can help you are:<\/p>\n

Sorry, dat heb ik niet verstaan.<\/em> (I\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t catch that.)<\/p>\n

Kunt u dat herhalen?<\/em> (Can you repeat that?)<\/p>\n

Wilt u wat langzamer spreken?<\/em> (Can you speak more slowly?)<\/p>\n

Can You Spell That?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are anything like me, then you may have stumbled with the old \u2018a for alpha\u2019, \u2018t for tango\u2019, NATO alphabet that is often used when spelling over the telephone.\u00a0 Interestingly, there is a more local Dutch (and Flemish) version.\u00a0 So that you are able to spell like the best of them, take a look below (the first word given is the Dutch version, the Flemish version is after the slash).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
