These consonants are categorized<span> <\/span>by way of articulation in five different \u2018sound\u2019 groups. I\u2019m not sure if there are official English translation for each of the sound groups, so I\u2019ll just give you the Dutch term and I\u2019ll try to describe the sounds as best as I can.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">First the five sound groups: plofklanken, wrijfklanken, neusklanken, vloeiklanken and glijklanken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Besides those, we have six \u2018mixed\u2019 consonants, mostly in words from foreign origin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Further, the plof- and wrijfklanken are also divided in sonorous and non-sonorous (if that\u2019s even a word!). With the non-sonorous sounds, the vocal cords don\u2019t vibrate but with the sonorous sounds they do. You can clearly hear the difference between \u2018p\u2019 and \u2018b\u2019,<span> <\/span>\u2018t\u2019 and \u2018d\u2019, \u2018s\u2019 and \u2018z\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The \u2018Plof\u2019 klanken = the thump sounds<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are five thump sounds: the \u2018p\u2019 as in \u2018paard\u2019 (horse), the \u2018t\u2019 as in \u2018taart\u2019 (cake), the \u2018k\u2019 as in \u2018kaart\u2019 (map or postal card), the \u2018b\u2019 as in \u2018baard\u2019 (beard) and de \u2018d\u2019 as in \u2018dal\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">(valley). These thumping sounds are created because with the pronunciation, the air comes out of the mouth with a small little thump. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Non-sonorous thump sounds are: p, t and k. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Sonorous thump sounds are: b and d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The \u2018Wrijf\u2019 klanken = the friction sounds<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are eight friction sounds: \u2018f\u2019 as in \u2018fiets\u2019 (bike), \u2018v\u2019 as in \u2018vaas\u2019 (vase), \u2018s\u2019 as in \u2018sok\u2019 (sock), \u2018z\u2019 as in \u2018zuur\u2019 (sour), \u2018ch\u2019 as in \u2018lach\u2019 (laugh), \u2018g\u2019 as in \u2018geel\u2019 (yellow), \u2018sj\u2019 as in \u2018sjaal\u2019 (scarf) and \u2018zj\u2019 as in \u2018journaal\u2019 (news bulletin). These friction sounds are created because with the pronunciation, there\u2019s a mild friction when you narrow your mouth. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Non-sonorous friction sounds are: f, s, ch and sj<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Sonorous friction sounds are: v, z, g and zj<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The \u2018Neus\u2019 klanken = the nose sounds<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are three nose sounds: the \u2018m\u2019 as in \u2018muur\u2019 (wall), the \u2018n\u2019 as in \u2018natuur\u2019 (nature) and the \u2018ng\u2019 as in \u2018wang\u2019 (cheek). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">These nose sounds are created because with the pronunciation, the air has to come out through the nose. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">You\u2019ll also notice how the lips are used for \u2018m\u2019, the tongue is used for the \u2018n\u2019 and the \u2018ng\u2019 seems to come from somewhere down the throat. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The \u2018Vloei\u2019 klanken = the flowing sounds<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are two flowing sounds: the \u2018l\u2019 as in \u2018lepel\u2019 (spoon) and the \u2018r\u2019 as in \u2018rem\u2019 (brake). These flowing sounds are created because with the pronunciation, the air flows evenly beside the tongue. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">The \u2018Glij\u2019 klanken = the gliding sounds<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are two gliding sounds: the \u2018j\u2019 as in \u2018jaar\u2019 (year) and the \u2018w\u2019 as in \u2018waar\u2019 (true). These sounds are also called the \u2018half-vowels\u2019 because the resemble the \u2018ie\u2019 and the \u2018oe\u2019 but are used as consonants. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">Affricaten <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">In Dutch there are four so called \u2018affricaten\u2019, or mixed consonants, mostly used in words of foreign origin: the \u2018ts\u2019 as is \u2018tsaar\u2019 (czar), \u2018dz\u2019 as in \u2018pizza\u2019, \u2018tsj\u2019 as in \u2018tsjilpen\u2019 (to twitter) and the \u2018dzj\u2019 as in \u2018gin\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"Bronnen.2C_noten_en.2Fof_referenties\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Dutch we have about twenty consonants.
