{"id":1751,"date":"2011-12-06T19:09:59","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T19:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/?p=1751"},"modified":"2014-11-20T14:27:29","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T14:27:29","slug":"things-to-do-in-december","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/things-to-do-in-december\/","title":{"rendered":"Things to Do in December"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you haven\u2019t realised it already, it is December \u2013 one of my favourite months in the year.\u00a0 And just what Dutch goodies can you look forward to for the month?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a small selection.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickensfestijn.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dickens Festival<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Visiting Deventer from the 17<sup>th<\/sup> of December until the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of December might make you think you have stepped back in time and understandably so, as the historic city centre will provide the backdrop for the Dickens Festival.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Holiday Performances<\/strong> \u2013 It is always around this time of year that we get extra\/special performances of classical concerts and performances like A Christmas Carol.\u00a0 If you are living in Den Haag, then you might want to take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denhaag.nl\/en\/residents\/to\/A-Christmas-Carol-in-The-Hague-11.htm\" target=\"_blank\">these performances<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oliebollen<\/strong> \u2013 You may have been able to get them since November but it is December, and in particular New Year\u2019s Eve, that these are eaten.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve not had one then let me describe them for you.\u00a0 Oliebollen are a variety of dumpling or doughnut made by dropping dough into a deep fryer filled with hot oil. \u00a0They are then usually served with powdered sugar.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nieuwjaarsnacht.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Year\u2019s Eve Fireworks Rotterdam<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 It may sound like World War III on the night but it isn\u2019t until midnight on December 31<sup>st<\/sup> 2011 that the national firework display will light up the sky around the Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unox.nl\/nl\/event\/nieuwjaarsduik\" target=\"_blank\">New Year\u2019s Dive Scheveningen<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Okay, technically this one falls into January but I wanted to make sure that I gave you plenty of warning.\u00a0 The description on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holland.com\" target=\"_blank\">Holland.com<\/a>\u2019s website is too perfect to change, so here it is in all it\u2019s glory:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cCelebrate the New Year with a typical Dutch tradition: a new year\u2019s dive. There are over 60 locations in the Netherlands where you can jump into the sea or a lake. No matter how cold it is, at least 25.000 people plunge into the freezing water each January. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The tradition started in 1960 when a swim club decided to start the year fresh with a plunge in the sea. The New Year\u2019s dive received national attention after a big soup brand decided to sponsor it. From that moment on, the amount of participants and locations has increased every year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The New Year\u2019s dive is cold, bold and the best way to start the year fresh. The largest dive is held at the beach of Scheveningen, where well over 10.000 people plunge into the sea each year.
