{"id":1765,"date":"2011-12-11T14:17:01","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T14:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/?p=1765"},"modified":"2014-07-18T15:29:24","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T15:29:24","slug":"classic-dutch-films-bert-haanstra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/dutch\/classic-dutch-films-bert-haanstra\/","title":{"rendered":"Classic Dutch Films:  Bert Haanstra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I asked my father which Dutch filmmakers I should look into, he immediately thought of Bert Haanstra. \u00a0&#8220;There are some really good ones,&#8221; he said, &#8220;with no sound.&#8221; \u00a0I expressed surprise, and my dad made a joke about cheap Dutchmen.<\/p>\n<p>But I don&#8217;t think it was parsimony that motivated Haanstra&#8217;s choices, and in most of the work that I&#8217;ve found, there is sound being used&#8211;there just isn&#8217;t much dialogue. \u00a0Haanstra made many documentaries and documentary shorts. \u00a0I&#8217;m posting two for you to check out, here: \u00a0one is called <em>Glas <\/em>(1958), and the other, <em>Zoo<\/em>\u00a0(1961). \u00a0Both titles are self-explanatory: \u00a0<em>Glas<\/em>\u00a0shows us glass-blowers inside a Dutch factory; <em>Zoo<\/em>\u00a0watches people and animals walk around a zoo. \u00a0Or, if you like, a <em>dierentuin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is <em>Glas<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bert Haanstra - Glas (1958)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aLS7--ZLCoI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It reminds me of the sequences that used to air on &#8220;Mr. Rogers&#8217; Neighborhood&#8221; when I was younger&#8211;do you know which ones I mean? \u00a0They would take the viewer inside a peanut butter factory, for instance. \u00a0Haanstra&#8217;s version is, of course, much more sophisticated. \u00a0I love the way the glass blowers are made to seem like jazz musicians, inflating their cheeks like trumpeters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I asked my father which Dutch filmmakers I should look into, he immediately thought of Bert Haanstra. \u00a0&#8220;There are some really good ones,&#8221; he said, &#8220;with no sound.&#8221; \u00a0I expressed surprise, and my dad made a joke about cheap Dutchmen.
